What is the main goal for this project?

The main project goal for this job description is to hire a writer and who can contribute to Spinning Forward's content by producing impactful and engaging stories related to the online creator economy and aspiring content creators of color in the Greater Toronto Area. The writer should be able to pitch and produce stories for the newsletter and social media channels, while embodying Spinning Forward's approach to storytelling by focusing on relevant and resonating news stories for their Gen Z and Millennial readership. The writer may also do script writing and storyboarding for in order to convert articles to short for video scripts.


Additionally, the goal is to find a writer who is curious, committed to improving their writing skills, and passionate about issues of equity, diversity, and financial inclusion.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

You do not need formal journalism experience to write for us although a background is journalism is an asset. Instead, you enjoy writing and improving.


Writing tasks will involve short, impactful curated updates and also longer 500 to 800 word articles exploring a topic or writing about a content creator. We encourage anyone who can write well and is enthusiastic about diving into the topics we cover to apply. Also, you may do some script writing and storyboarding for short form videos.


We cover the online creator economy, and aspiring content creators of color across all social media platforms in the Greater Toronto Area. We do from their an equity and inclusion lens.


How will you support learners in completing the project?

Mentoring: The supervisor will provide guidance, coaching, and feedback to support the student in completing their assigned tasks and projects. The student will be mentored and their voice and input will be heard and supported. In a collaborative professional growth environment, the student will be offered career advice and tips that connect the dots and prepare them for the future workplace. The students will be offered references in recognition for their effort and positive attitude to complete a project.


Industry Exposure: Work placements expose individuals to the real-world workings of a particular industry. It allows them to observe and understand industry practices, trends, and dynamics. This exposure can help individuals make informed career decisions and gain a deeper understanding of their chosen field.


Software Tools: Access to various software online tools

Skill Development: Work placements provide an opportunity to develop and enhance various skills relevant to a specific field or industry. By working in a professional setting, individuals can learn and practice skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and time management.




What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

Requirements and how to succeed:

  • Able to work independently and quick to reach out for support when needed.
  • You love to learn, write well and want to improve as a writer
  • Proficient storytelling skills, with a particular emphasis on coverage around issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough research, write effectively, and organize information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Multimedia experience, including proficiency in social media, video production, audio editing, digital producing and design, and photography.
  • Previous reporting experience beyond school assignments, showcasing a genuine commitment to pursuing journalism as a career.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with team members and other stakeholders.
  • Eager to contribute to the health and well-being of local communities
