Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

We are looking to gain a better understanding of our target market to make sure there is a need and demand for our product. We believe there is a set of consumers that want to "do their part" to mitigate climate change, but currently there is not a good way for them to invest in nature restoration with the goal of a financial return. People can buy carbon credits, but they cannot invest in the generation of those credits. We want to bring this emerging market from nature funds down to the average investor. These types of projects have long time lines with most projects for restoration requiring capital up front with a 40 year credit stream after planting trees. As such, while the NPV and IRR is high, the projects take many years to develop with the typical return only starting 5 years after investment. These long time lines align quite well to retirement accounts. However, we need to confirm this hypotheses and assess the demand.

  • Assess the size of our the market for self-directed IRA accounts and particularly the % of the portfolio that should be directed to a new asset class of nature
  • Analyse consumer interest in investing in nature and what types of projects and what point in the lifecycle of a project are most appealing
  • Create a survey and interview questions for empirical interviews to be conducted to gain feedback on the potential offering and services.
  • Analyze survey and interview results to create recommendations on how to develop this new offering
What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should complete the following list of activities:

  • Assessed our market size and share to determine the amount of potential customers we have
  • Created survey and interview questions to gain feedback on the product offering
  • Analyzed the survey and interview results to create recommendations for next steps.

Bonus steps would include:

  • Researched the most effective marketing strategies for our segments to include in the report and recommendations.

Final deliverables should include

  • A report including research, survey data trends, and recommendations for next steps for our branding and positioning.
  • A 20-minute presentation.
How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:

  • Who is our target market?
  • Are we happy with our current positioning and marketing strategies for that segment?
  • Which of our products and services are most popular?
  • Input on choices, problems or anything else the students might encounter.

About the company

Wovoka is a tech-enabled, community-driven carbon credit project developer. More than 3,000 scientists have contributed to the latest IPCC report and have concluded that nature-based solutions are 3 of the top 5 largest emission reduction opportunities by 2030.  Wovoka focuses on ecosystem restoration, which is the only carbon removal in that top 5 and the only carbon removal “technology” that can work and scale to the size needed to actually mitigate the worst tipping points of climate change. We specifically work in SE Asia, which has the largest opportunities in this space from a combination of biodiversity, ecosystem carbon storage potential, and low-cost labor for reforestation activities. Additionally, Singapore and South Korea both present strong compliance carbon markets to sell into as regulations and carbon price rise over the next few years. Wovoka has one contract already with Terraformation for a 3,000 hectare mangrove and tropical forest restoration across four communities in Camarines Norte, and a pipeline of 50,000+ hectares of further opportunities.
