interactive stories resource management strategic thinking game design playtesting user interface (ui) decision making game theory educational gamesMultibit Solutions Inc. seeks a team of aspiring game designers to develop a compelling game economy within our simulation platform. The project involves crafting intricate resource interactions and designing workflows that challenge player decision-making. The focus is on creating a balanced and engaging resource-driven gameplay experience without the need for visual or control-based mechanics. The game's user interface is data-driven from the designed game resources and economy.
Participants will apply their classroom knowledge of game design principles to develop a game economy where players must strategically manage resources to achieve specific objectives. The project aims to enhance players' engagement by introducing complex decision-making scenarios that test their strategic thinking and planning skills. Key tasks include defining the game resources that exist within the game and the workflows that transform game state using those resources. Next, participants will define a game world with resources added to game characters and world locations. Then participants define the UI, laying out the HUD for players to interact with the game.
As participants design their game, they can also play-test what they've come up with and make changes to their design in real time.
Possible game styles:
- Simulation - e.g. lemonade stand
- Resource management - e.g. HayDay
- interactive stories - like single-player dungeon and dragon campaigns, though battle may or may not be supported at the time of this project
Game elements supported:
- Characters - recruit NPCs, option for player to choose their character
- Gear - required for certain actions, may confer bonuses
- Skill tree - user chooses their path
- Attributes (XP, skills, health, stamina) - Influenced by player behavior, not choices
- Currencies, material, tokens
- Factories convert inputs to outputs
- Harvestable items (e.g., trees for wood)
- Recipes - for crafting
- Quests - guide players through the game
- Collectibles, achievements
- Lore - several options, from short tips to rich, full screen to support storytelling
The deliverables for this project include a comprehensive game economy design document outlining resource interactions, workflows, and player decision-making challenges. Additionally, participants will provide a set of resource flow diagrams and a detailed report on the balancing strategies employed. The final submission should also include a presentation summarizing the design process and key findings, demonstrating the application of game design principles in creating an engaging simulation experience.
Also, their game design will have been implemented on the platform, allowing classmates and instructors to play through and evaluate the game that was designed.

About the company
The founder, Klaus Rubba, has over 20 years of software development experience, 5 in mobile game development and the last 8 in buildnig SaaS products like a silent auction app (Bid Beacon), online raffles (Raffle Rocket) and community engagement and member management (CommuniBee).
The current product in development lets creators transform their knowledge/experience/creativity into engaging game experiences without needing to learn coding, scripting, or dealing with complex physics, colliders, or user controls. The project is a game builder platform that focuses on resource management and challenging players with interesting resource allocation decisions rather than twitch mechanics.
