Details

Develop 1-2 page Plant Fact Sheet and a Storymap for selected native plant(s) of Alberta in collaboration with the Alberta Native Plant Council (and Royal Alberta Museum). This will involve selecting plant species, researching information about the species and developing the fact sheet and storymap to correspond with it.

Deliverables

Project Details & Deliverables:

1)      Use the Flora of North America and VasCan online to select a plant species that is native to Alberta. Your ANPC/RAM supervisor can help you select this species. Confirm the species with your Supervisor prior to starting to discuss plant authority names and changes in names. Some of the literature you will find will use synonyms of the selected species. If you complete the tasks below, you can select another native plant species and complete the same exercise again.

2)      Use various online and printed floras, primary and secondary literature, to research information about the selected species. Make sure to have a citation list to include as part of your completed project. Images can be provided by ANPC or other open source sites that have the correct species images. Potential opportunity for students to come and image seeds at the Royal Alberta Museum to use as part of the project. Information in the brochure can include but is not limited to:

·         Plant description

·         Plant images

·         Habitat description

·         Habitat images

·         Fun Facts

·         Ecological Details / Restoration Details / Recovery Information

·         Fruit / Seed description & images (provided by RAM)

·      Plant uses

·         How do native plants help us (e.g., erosion control)? Help our province? Our world? The animals?

·         What can people do to help native plants in Alberta?

3)      Design development using Adobe Illustrator or InDesign preferably and/or MS PowerPoint.

4)      Design a Storymap of the species to then link with the brochure.

5)      OPTION Work with Diana at the museum to review plant morphology of selected species from herbarium sheets (TBC) – extract data such as collection area, habitat, and key identification characteristics and other important notes.

6)      OPTION Work with Diana at the museum to image sheets/fruit of the plant selected to add to brochure and to discuss ecology (e.g., dispersal mode), morphology, traditional uses, etc. of those seeds/fruit if applicable.

7)      Summarize your project methods, main findings, challenges and successes, and provide a list of all sources uses (citation).

8)      Deliverables should include the any developed templates (digital), final brochure (printed & digital), the final Storymap, and the project summary document and/or any other requirements outlined for your course.
