user interface (ui) decision making quantum mechanics engineering design processThe project focuses on developing a quantum powered sensor to monitor microplastic particles beginning in aquatic environments. These environments are often challenging to study due to their complexity and the time-consuming nature of traditional methods. The goal is to create a sensor that can perform both chemical and physical characterization of microplastic particles. This will be achieved through a field-based, flow-through system or a fully-submersible in-situ sensor. The ultimate goal is to help standardize in-situ analysis, providing greater control in multi-sample studies. Additionally, the sensor will export data in standardized formats to the MPConnect analytics platform, enhancing accessibility and insights for decision-making and life cycle assessments. An intuitive user interface will be developed to simplify the sampling process, making it user-friendly and efficient.
The project will deliver a prototype of the Microplastics Sensor capable of in-situ analysis. Key deliverables include:
- A quantum sensor prototype that uses an innovative ultra-broadband, quantum-entangled source for physical and chemical fingerprinting of microplastic particles.
- A user interface that simplifies the sampling process.
- Data export functionality to the MPConnect platform in standardized formats.
- Documentation detailing the sensor's design, functionality, and user instructions.

About the company
Unabted plastic production and mismanaged waste has resulted in a plastic pollution crisis that spans the globe and negatively impacts human, animal, and ecosystem health. The plastics life cycle also significantly contributes to climate change. AbbaTek Group Inc., the creators of MPConnect, is a cleantech company dedicated to addressing emerging environmental data management problems, beginning with the issue of microplastics. As a social enterprise registered in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, AbbaTek combines technological development, institutional change, and social impact.
