Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

The main goal for the project is to develop a 4-week summer sport camp manual that focuses on scaffolding skills development over the duration of the camp. The manual should include example drills for all main stream sports. The manual will also include instructions for traditional Indigenous sports/games, emotional regulation games, and ideas for crafts. This will involve several different steps for the students, including:

-Researching and understanding traditional Indigenous sports and games as well as the history and use of mainstream sports in colonization.

- Researching and understanding the principles of scaffolding skills development in sports.

- Creating a comprehensive manual that outlines the skills development progression over the 4-week camp.

- Developing example drills for mainstream sports that align with the skills development progression.

-Creating instructions and examples to lead and instruct traditional Indigenous sports/games

-Creating a section on emotional regulation games/activities with instructions and examples.

-Creating a section with crafting/arts related activities

- Incorporating feedback from sports coaches, knowledge keepers, and other experts to ensure the effectiveness of the manual.

An initial draft manual is in existence that can be used as a starting point to give direction to this project. The existing manual does not provide enough information for a summer camp leader to be able to use as a resource.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should complete the following tasks:

- A well-researched and documented manual that includes sections on developing sport skills, playing traditional Indigenous sports/activities, and a section on holistic summer camp activities such as emotional regulation activities and craft/art activities for the 4-week summer sport camp. The manual will be used by Youth Leaders to run the summer camp programming and will be their main tool when building and facilitating their daily camp schedules.

- Example drills for all main stream sports included in the manual.

- Incorporation of feedback from sports coaches and experts to enhance the quality of the manual.

Final deliverables:

- A finalized summer sport camp manual in a digital and printable format.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will regularly meet with SHED program leads for input, consultation, and feedback. Students will also be able to consult with community members and knowledge keepers from SHED communities. Students will be given access to Canva. If other digital tools are required or needed for students, these will also be provided.

What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

In order to complete this project, students can self-teach, but it is beneficial to be familiar with:

- Sports coaching and training principles.

- Research and documentation skills.

- Communication and collaboration with sports experts.

- Knowledge of mainstream sports and their skill development requirements.

-Design skills and creativity

An interdisciplinary team would be ideal, pairing sport/physical activity discipline with design discipline students.

Students will be expected to research and learn more about the above as the project goes along.
