Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

The East Kootenay Invasive Species Council (EKISC) would like an animated video created that explains the negative impacts of invasive species (negative impacts on the environment, economy and human health/way of life). This video will be displayed on our website and shared in our newsletter.

This will involve several different steps for the students, including:

  • Familiarizing themselves with the East Kootenay Invasive Species Council, and our vision and mission, and the negative impacts invasive species has on our landscapes and within our communities.
  • Developing a storyboard and animating scenes for the video.
  • Selecting suitable background music.
  • Creating a video format that is landscape, suitable for YouTube, as well as one vertical, suitable for social media.

Bonus steps in the process would also include:

  • Recommending ideas for future marketing videos.
What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should demonstrate:

  • Understanding of our organizations target market, vison and mission
  • Understanding of the negative impacts invasive species play on the natural world
  • Be able to ID priority invasive species for the East Kootenay region
  • Provide the audience what they can do to prevent and limit the spread of invasive species
  • Selection of suitable background music

Bonus steps would include:

  • Recommending ideas for future videos

Final deliverables should include

  • 2 Animated videos
How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:

  • Our target market, products and services
  • Our current brand guidelines
  • Input on choices, problems or anything else the students might encounter

Additionally, EKISC will provide resources on invasive species, such as:

  • Invasive species in British Columbia
  • Invasive species priorities for the East Kootenay region
  • List of impacts to note in the vide
  • Videos to use as an example or resource
What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

In order to complete this project, students can self-teach, but it is beneficial to be familiar with:

Again, students can complete this project without any of the prior knowledge listed here. Students will be expected to research and learn more about the above as the project goes along.

About the company

The East Kootenay Invasive Species Council (EKISC) builds partnerships and supports collaborative projects on the ground, and in natural and applied science, policy research, outreach and education to protect our forests, fields, gardens, waterways and cities from the damaging effects of invasive species.

Our Field Operations team helps partners to plan, coordinate, and monitor terrestrial invasive species. We use an integrated approach to treat invasive species on the landscape, relying on a combination of biological, chemical, mechanical, and cultural control.

Our Education team works to spread knowledge to curb the spread of invasive species. We work with the public and industry alike by offering workshops, courses, resources, and online content promoting behaviour change.

It is important to note that we are not a land manager, and we do not set priorities or make management decisions. We assist land managers with creating and achieving their invasive species management goals, and coordinate management between organizations to increase efficiencies.
