Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

Nanaimo Science has worked with youth on a Citizen Science project since 2015, collecting data on bivalves (specifically clams) at Departure Bay Beach. Our data set has been updated to record all Varnish Clams from students' data sheets, however, records for other clams (Manilla and Pacific Little Neck Clams) has not been recorded. We are looking for a student to encode these records into our existing data set.

This project will allow us, together with our partners at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public School Board (who provides the classes of students who takes part in the Citizen Science project annually) to get a more complete picture of the number of non-target species found during these surveys.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

- Meet with Nanaimo Science to understand the scope of the Citizen Science project and the data sheets used.

- Work at the Nanaimo Science studio to access and encode the data sheets into Google Sheets (specifically date, quadrat coordinates, size, etc.)

- Work with our Outreach Educator to incorporate these numbers into our complete data set, and help with some data analysis if skilled in this area.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Nanaimo Science will provide guidance from our Outreach Educators who have taken part in delivering this program, and who have encoded data into the data set.

Access to a work laptop and workspace at our studio located within Country Club Centre will be provided.

Please note that this project cannot be done remotely. All data sheets must remain at Nanaimo Science.

What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?
  • Experienced with data entry is beneficial
  • Interest in, or, understanding of science methods and surveying
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Google Sheets
