Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

We are excited to be expanding our business. We are bitMachina, and we manage a network of Bitcoin ATMs located in Ontario and Québec. With any expansion, having a financial plan is one of the keys to success, and we would like to involve students in creating one for our venture.

This will involve several different steps for the students, including:

  • Learning about our business strategy from the executive team.
  • Creating forecasts using Excel (or another financial software) for sales, income, and profit projections (conservative and aggressive).
  • Working with our team to develop an expense budget.
  • Conducting a break-even analysis timeline using financial projections.
  • Reporting on projected assets and liabilities.
  • Including visual comparisons such as graphs and charts to show the differences between the conservative and aggressive income projection.
What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should complete the following list of activities:

  • Completed a sales forecast and an income projection for the next five years of operations.
  • Conducted a break-even analysis using the sales forecast and expense budget.
  • Analyzed projected assets and liabilities our company will have in the next five years of operations.
  • Included extra visuals in the report to help us understand the differences between the conservative and aggressive income projections.

What the student needs to deliver:

  • A final report including a sales forecast, income projection, expense budget, break-even point, assets, liabilities, as well as any calculations and assumptions used.
  • A 30-minute presentation explaining all research and findings from the report.
How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:

  • What does our company do?
  • How much money do we have to start?
  • How much are we seeking from investors?
  • What type of expenses are we anticipating?
What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

In order to complete this project, students can self-teach, but it is beneficial to be familiar with:

  • Accounting concepts including sales forecasting and breakeven analysis.
  • Business strategy.
  • Startups and entrepreneurial knowledge.
  • Basic excel calculations and commands.

Nice to haves for students include

  • Experience with virtual currencies and or money service businesses.
About the company

bitMachina is an Ottawa-based company that allows customers to buy Bitcoin with cash. To do so, we collaborate with local companies by installing Bitcoin ATMs and Counters in their stores. We launched our first point of sale in September 2019, and thanks to our straightforward approach, we have since added 35 new locations all over Eastern Ontario and Québec. We already have fully operational software enabling users to purchase Bitcoin in person and market validation for the service we want to expand. We first want to raise funds to grow our working capital so that we can add more ATMs and increase revenues. Then, we will start licensing the software we developed to other operators and collect a fee for each transaction.
