Details

The 171 Electric Bike Company Inc. seeks to understand the economic implications of the recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on electric bikes imported into Ontario, Canada. This project aims to analyze how these tariffs affect the pricing, sales, and overall market dynamics of electric bikes in the region. Learners will apply their knowledge of international trade, economics, and market analysis to assess the short-term and long-term impacts of these tariffs. The project will involve researching historical data, current market trends, and potential consumer behavior changes due to increased costs. By understanding these factors, the company hopes to develop strategies to mitigate negative impacts and explore opportunities for growth in a changing economic landscape.

This project aims to conduct a desktop study analyzing the impact of Trump’s new tariffs on imported electric bikes (e-bikes) and how Ontario's e-bike industry can benefit from this situation. The objective is to identify opportunities for local manufacturers, optimize supply chains, and develop marketing strategies to promote domestically produced e-bikes. This study will be completed within one month.

Objectives

  1. Assess Tariff Impacts: Examine how the new tariffs affect pricing, demand, and supply of e-bikes in Ontario.
  2. Identify Local Manufacturing Opportunities: Research potential for local production to mitigate tariff impacts.
  3. Develop Marketing Strategies: Create strategies to promote the benefits of purchasing locally made e-bikes.
  4. Evaluate Supply Chain Adjustments: Analyze existing supply chains and identify areas for improvement.

Deliverables

The project deliverables will include a comprehensive report detailing the findings of the tariff impact analysis. This report should include data-driven insights, visualizations, and strategic recommendations for the company. Additionally, a presentation summarizing the key findings and proposed strategies will be delivered to the company's management team. The deliverables aim to provide actionable insights to help the company navigate the challenges posed by the new tariffs.

Background

The electric bike market in Ontario has been expanding due to a growing interest in eco-friendly transportation options. However, the recent tariffs imposed under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 could lead to increased prices for consumers and challenges for businesses that rely on imports. By understanding these dynamics through a desktop study, we can develop actionable strategies for local e-bike manufacturers.

Methodology

1. Literature Review (Week 1)

  • Gather and review existing literature on the impact of tariffs on similar industries.
  • Analyze reports and studies regarding the electric bike market in Canada and local manufacturing capabilities.

2. Data Analysis (Week 2)

  • Collect relevant data on e-bike prices, sales trends, and consumer preferences from secondary sources.
  • Examine economic indicators that may influence the demand for e-bikes in Ontario.

3. Strategy Development (Week 3)

  • Synthesize findings to identify opportunities for local manufacturing and supply chain optimization.
  • Develop marketing strategies that emphasize the benefits of buying locally-produced e-bikes, including their contribution to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.

4. Final Report Preparation (Week 4)

  • Compile all findings and recommendations into a comprehensive report.
  • Present strategies for implementation to stakeholders within the e-bike industry.

Expected Outcomes

  • A detailed report analyzing the impact of tariffs on the electric bike market in Ontario.
  • Identification of potential local manufacturing opportunities and strategies for enhancement.
  • Marketing strategies aimed at increasing consumer awareness and demand for locally produced e-bikes.
  • Recommendations for optimizing supply chains to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Conclusion

This desktop study aims to address the challenges posed by Trump’s new tariffs by providing a comprehensive analysis of their impact on Ontario's e-bike industry. By focusing on local manufacturing opportunities, developing effective marketing strategies, and optimizing supply chains, we can turn potential challenges into growth opportunities. Completion of this project within one month will position local businesses to better navigate the changing market dynamics.

By leveraging the current landscape shaped by the tariffs, we can promote electric bikes as not only a viable transportation alternative but also a means of supporting local economies and fostering sustainable practices in Ontario.

The ebike industry is supposed to help consumers make smart choices about the environment thru alternate modes of transportation. The electric bike industry is the wild west where over 90% of imported ebikes are rebranded. Meaning you do not know the manufacturer which is important for the longevity of the product. Currently average ebike life is less than 500 hours and they cannot be repaired and end up in the landfill. That is why 171 Electric Bike Company was formed to do 2 things. Educate the consumer, and keep our ebikes out of the landfill. Our Company philosophy is 'Touch Green' our motto is 'Buy it once - Ride it for life"
