What is the main goal for this project?

Southbrook is Canada's first certified biodynamic and organic winery. We wish to create content that can be used across social networks, our website, and in the winery. Our winery focuses on sustainability - what we do must have a positive impact on our local community and the land that we farm on. We do use the land lightly - no chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers; the water we use is cleaned through bio-swales and wetlands; solar panels provide our electricity... We practice regenerative agriculture - we plant indigenous grasses and flowers to increase biological matter in the soil, and make nutrients more accessible to the vines.

Our challenge is communicating our commitment to the environment in the context of selling our wine. We believe that most of our existing customers support our philosophy, but to attract new customers we need not only to have great wine, but we need also to tell people about what's important to us, without sounding preachy or disingenuous.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Our objective is to understand how to better leverage our leadership in organics, biodynamics, environmental practices to acquire new customers, increase the support from existing customers and be recognized as a leader in the industry.

- there are 3 certified organic wineries in Ontario (out of ~200)

- over 250 chemicals can be added to conventional commercial wines - from colour and tannin to gmo yeasts that will create specific flavours in wine. This is in addition to the chemicals used in the vineyard - from fossil-fuel derived fertilizers to herbicides and fungicides like glyphosate and paraquat. Southbrook uses none of these.

- the LCBO does not prioritize organics, 7% of the wine they sell is VQA Ontario wine. The LCBO will say Ontario wine makes up 30% of their sales but, in fact, these are mostly blends of 80% international and 20% Ontario juice.

- potential customers may be attracted to green ideas, low sulfites, clean wine. We need more ideas on how to reach and motivate them.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will work closely with the primary project manager who is supervising and available for questions. This will also include occasional progress meetings where adjustments to the students' tasks and duties can be made if necessary.

We will also provide extensive background material on Southbrook, organics and biodynamics.

What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

A student or team with excellent writing and social media skills would be the ideal candidate for this project. The student or team should have an interest in wine.
