Dementia Training Online Modules
We are looking for an interactive and innovative learning module for teams working with seniors with dementia in a retirement home setting. The students would develop learning modules on dementia, the approach to care, behaviour strategies and interventions and person centereed approach to dementia care. The modules would be technically savvy and interesting for a team member with a test your knowledge quiz to complete the sessions. Overall length of the modules would be 1.5 hrs.
Development of a Technology Literacy Instructive program for seniors
We would like to have an instructive video or learning program developed for seniors living in a retirement home setting on the use of technology, how to navigate the internet and social media. During the COVID period it has become paramount that programs for engagement are offered virtually as well as using technology as a vehicle to stay connected with family and friends and with the community as a whole. Students will brainstorm innovative ideas that can support seniors in learning how to use technology that is easy so use and understand. Students may need to pilot the learning program they created with some seniors residing in a Seasons Retirement Home to get feedback for the purpose of building a short innovate learning strategy to be shared with other seniors living in Seasons Retirement Homes.
Create online Learning seminar for our virtual age well series for seniors
We are interested in partnering with a team of students who are able to build a virtual course for our residents. The course will be included in our Learning Hub we offer through the residents in suite channel as well as a live-virtual opportunity for a virtual classroom experience for our residents. The team would need to do an interest survey and course content and course delivery. Collaboration on course content and delivery will be available. UX design students welcome
UX Design course creation for leadership team
We would like to partner with a UX design team to build a learning module on coaching for our service team leaders. The company culture playbooks and collaborative partnership is available for reference and for foundational content. This course will be one of a series to build our mentorship program.
Injury Prevention Research
Seasons retirement homes is experiencing an increase in injury due to the recent changes in workflow with the medication cart. Pre-Covid, the cart remained stationary and the residents would come to the nursing station to receive their medications. During Covid we adapted our service process to a mobile service where the team brings the medication to the residents who are in their suites. Our organization is interested in having Ergonomic students assess the new process. We would like students to develop a feedback survey for the nurses to identify area for improvement in the new process. The new cart (provided by CareRX) will be available on site at Fanshawe College until mid October for evaluation.We envision this project to include, but not be limited to:Develop survey of questions on user feedback to the cart design and new processDocument working conditions & task descriptions through online meeting and discussion with staff at multiple locations. We are currently looking to work with students- Recreation Studies/Social Service Worker/Social Worker or in Kinesiology (physical activity perspective) - to research and provide recommendations for recreational activities and exercises that will help improve the experience for seniors. We would like students to be innovative and research new methodologies that we may not have previously considered, to research global initiatives that are interesting and unique. With seniors living longer and the demographic of seniors increasing seniors have many options to choose from for living solutions, from services coming into their own home and apartment, retirement living communities. This project will include research on the local areas in Alberta where our communities are to determine a competitive analysis and introduce marketing opportunities. The Conference Board of Canada has identified that there is an urgent need to address the labor crisis in healthcare. We are currently looking to work with students who will research avenues for recruitment and retention of healthcare workers for a retirement home setting, particularly frontline workers in care and dining. We also believe students may be in a unique position to work with each other to brainstorm innovative strategies for our corporation to attract employees. This is an opportunity to students to learn more about the healthcare industry and in particular working with seniors. The 2016 Census identified the fast growth rate of seniors in Canada and the need to service this fast growing population.
Retirement Living of the Future
We are looking for teams to research current trends in senior living (retirement NOT long term care) and to identify future trends and possible innovations for seniors (baby boomer generation) who will be making the buying decision to live in a retirement home in 2023 are beyond. The scope would include not only services wanted but lifestyle preferences and environmental expectations (building locations, amenities etc..). Teams may want to include asking baby boomers, researching statistics and trends globally for innovative and interesting ideas. This project scope is fluid but the teams would produce a presentation outlining the retirement home of the future (based on literature, research etc..) and marketing strategies to attract this generation.

Health & Wellness: Hospitality & Dining
The most recent research is all about nutrition and plant based blue zone type approach for increasing longevity and preventing age related chronic illness. With the constant advancement of health research, it is important for us to stay up to date with our menu and the nutritional information on which it's based. As retirement home operators, we're concerned with the dietary requirements of seniors, so the goal is for this menu to meet those needs as well as catering specifically to brain health. The menu should also strike a good balance between different types of protein.We want to use this opportunity to develop a 5 week menu that provides meal options based on the latest in seniors' health research, along with preparation sheets for our staff on how to prepare and plate the recipes. Currently, we do not have a specialized program for End of Life care. We would like to better understand what options are available, what their impact has been, and what science is behind them. We're looking for something that could be implemented in many retirement homes, and is appropriate to a retirement setting, not a hospice. A seniors housing community runs on a relatively fixed cost basis and utilities are a large cost driver. We are considering a number of technologies, systems and procurement strategies to achieve savings but with the changing landscape including Carbon Tax Policies make decisions more difficult.We need to develop a cohesive understanding of the 5 to 10 year outlook on electricity pricing in Ontario and Alberta and develop a strategy to insulate our exposure to costs increases due to carbon tax levies.Students who spend time on this project will gather real world experience on current pressures associated to utility consumption and generate innovative and forward looking solutions that not only will guide supply chain decisions but may also shape the way multi residential developers select HVAC systems in the coming years. These innovations may come in the way of Geo Thermal Systems, Net Zero Sustainable Energy Systems or hybrids. Each student group will complete 600 hours of work in order to provide recommendations on the problem/opportunity that your firm is facing and report back to your company in a 15-minute presentation with accompanying detailed strategic brief.
