Description
Transdisciplinary Project: Aging in Place
Objective: Students will design four different virtual layouts for kitchen and bath to facilitate aging in place and enable individuals to experience the layouts in a virtual setting and will provide an presentation about the challenges facing the Government of Alberta in the years ahead and their recommendation to face a growing population.
Partners - Bow Valley College, Accessible Housing Calgary, Government of Alberta
Other Partners as needed
• Students in both Health and Human Services and Kitchen and Bath design research aging in place and design methodologies, and submit a paper summarizing best practices (Mentor - Accessible Housing) (week 1)
• Estimate costs and create mockups of different layouts using software to facilitate aging in place. (Week 2 & 3 & 4)
• Conduct cost benefit analysis from the public health standpoint and propose a funding model (Mentor - GoA Capital Planning) (Week 2-6)
• Create a virtual showroom to showcase accessible designs for renovations, allowing viewers to experience different options assisting them in making decisions.
This is a Transdisciplinary Project, Students do not need the skills in each area but they do need to be able to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds.
Participants will receive guidance from Bow Valley College Staff member as the main point of contact.
Week 1 Understanding aging in place/ different models of care Background/Introduction to project
Week 2 What can families do to stay in their own residences for longer?
Week 3 what is the average cost to renovate a home to allow for aging in place?
Week 4 How long can modifications extend the stays in residence?
Research Portion (GoA datasets)
Week 5 Report on future demand and how current capacity has to change. We want to know what city and what town is most at need for adding capacity in Alberta
Week 6 What is the average cost to the government for a person to be in supportive living for a year? What is the cost to the individual for a person to be in supportive living per year?
Week 7 Is there a cost for staying out of supportive living for too long what is that cost?
Week 8-12 Build a case to increase renovation budget that Alberta Government reimburses for a specific region
