Data Analysis Research Assistant

The project necessitates proficiency in computer programming and skills for qualitative data analysis, interpretation, and visualizing findings. A background in coding is essential, as is the ability to categorize qualitative data for applying statistical methods, particularly with non-numeric attributes. Proficiency in engaging with qualitative data to extract meaningful insights, identify trends, and discover correlations is a critical requirement. The project's culmination will be a paper underpinned by supporting visualizations and statistical evidence.

A Scoping Review on the Knowledge Gaps in the Current Literature Critical Race Theory and Anti-Black Racism Framework in Social Work Education, Research, and Practice - Winter 2024

This proposed research is a scoping review. This type of methodology seeks to undertake a comprehensive search of the breadth and scope of all available literature pertaining to the research topic and question. The main purpose of conducting a scoping study is to identify gaps in existing literature, to summarize and synthesize research findings from existing literature. The data will be amassed from published peer-reviewed academic publications in English from 2000 to 2022 through key word searches such as ‘social work and critical race theory and education,’ and ‘social work and anti-Black racism and research’ in order to extract relevant data. Some of the electronic databases that would be used are EBSCO and ProQuest. The abstract of articles will be reviewed to ensure they meet the keyword search criteria. Those that are not a good fit will be eliminated at this stage. This process will be followed by an extensive review of the articles’ content to complete the final selection of eligible articles. This will be followed by the charting of emergent themes. The scoping review will be concluded with a written report of the findings.

Genetic Diversity in Franklin’s Ground Squirrels

The project aims to characterize mitochondrial genetic diversity in historical and contemporary individuals of Franklin’s ground squirrels. Currently this species is listed as “data deficient” in the province of Alberta, meaning that there is not enough information to determine if it is declining and in need of protections. Genetic information, coupled with other information from field surveys and community observations, can help to fill this information gap and help guide management decisions.

MacEwan Careers & Experience Research Project

Leadership and Engagement is a team that provides MacEwan students with cocurricular experiential learning opportunities. This includes but is not limited to campus and communities volunteer experiences and activities to develop career-ready leadership skills. Initiatives include the Emerging Leaders Certificate program, MacEwan Ambassador Program, Golden Key International Honour Society chapter, Co-curricular Record, First-Year Experience Mentorship Program, and the iVolunteer campaign.Students will complete a project for MacEwan’s Careers and Experience Office that explores experiences and perspectives among students who are participating or have participated in Leadership and Engagement programs and services. Ms. Dogbe leads these initiatives at MacEwan and is hoping to further understand how to best support MacEwan students, and their future career journeys and prospects, through volunteer and community engagement opportunities.Research questions: What are the strengths of the volunteering/community engagement opportunities currently offered? Can they be enhanced and, if so, how? What are the barriers and needs among MacEwan students with reference to participating in volunteering/community engagement opportunities? In what ways are students benefiting from participating in the volunteering/community engagement opportunities (i.e., have these experiences helped students navigate their career journey, how)? Research participants: MacEwan students who are or have been engaged in MacEwan’s Leadership and Engagement programs and services.

Emerging Indigenous and Racialized Artists Across Canada Research Assistantship

This research project aims to identify the emerging voices in the Canadian art scene, especially those working with new media and deploying interdisciplinary approaches. Further, the project aims to tackle the lack of representation of racialized and Indigenous artists in the field of Art History. In particular, there are gaps in knowledge and understanding of the themes, methodologies, and contributions of BIPOC artists, and research is needed to fill the gaps. I am particularly interested in the Canadian context because recent social movements such as Black Lives Matter, Idle No More and protests over residential schools have had a positive impact on the art world by generating opportunities for racialized and Indigenous artists to participate in residencies, public speaking events, and exhibit their work in artist-run centers, galleries and museums across Canada. Additionally, a number of artists who have not yet found opportunities to exhibit their work in professional art spaces, have developed their own virtual galleries or use social media such as Instagram to promote their work. By looking at the programming of Canadian art spaces and virtual galleries, this research will identify new and rising artists. Moreover, by researching artists' personal accounts and independent groups in social media, the project will fill the institutional gaps. This research will enable me to include the work of emerging Canadian artists of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds into the Art history curriculum at MacEwan.Outputs:the student will produce an annotated database of emerging racialized and Indigenous artists working in Canada. the student will identify key themes and methods, rather than assuming, as it is often the case, that marginalized artists engage with issues of identity and representation.Outcomes: developing a greater understanding of racialized artists, the themes they engage with, and their contributions to Canadian art history;updating the curriculum of ARTE 304 Theory of Contemporary Art and ARTE 324 History of Interdisciplinary Art at MacEwan;identifying key raising artists that can be included in the exhibition professor Vergara-Vargas will curate in Montreal in May 2024.

A Framework for Developing and Assessing Programming Skills using H5P and Moodle Phase #2

Assessing student’s knowledge and skills for programming is often limited to their knowledge of the language and coding ability. Development tools are often an overlooked aspect of programming. Some attempt have been made to add content to courses but it is often difficult to assess student skills through traditional means. Combining H5P content with Moodle offers an interactive way for students to learn, practice, and instructors to assess skills as opposed to assess knowledge. The goal of this project is to design and develop a framework for H5P content for learning and developing skills using tools such as: Vim, Make, and Gdb.

Use of 360 LIDAR and the ROS Operating System in a Robotics Laboratory Setting

Providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills is desired but often limited within a single Robotics course. In addition, some advanced algorithms (such as SLAM - simultaneous location and mapping) might not fit within the contents of an entry level course however the topics can still provide great teaching value in terms of engagement and interest. The question becomes how to incorporate difficult topics without overwhelming students. The goal of this project is to design and develop a modular framework for using the Robotic Operating System (ROS) and a 360 LIDAR for teaching robotic localization within the computer science curriculum.

The main goal of this project is to spatially document information on changes in the position and lay-out of the fur trade post called Fraser Lake Post, British Columbia (AKA Fort Fraser). As is typical of fur trade posts, Fraser Lake Post underwent cycles in its operation, periodically closing and reopening in a different location, as well as being frequently remodeled and repaired. The faculty researcher has various nineteenth and early twentieth century maps, photographs and written descriptions of the layout of the fort, as well as historical and modern aerial images of the vicinity of its locations. The student research assistant will georeference images of the fort and help the researcher to relate the images to descriptions of changes in the fort’s location.
