Plastic pollution poses significant health risks, and understanding its impact is crucial for promoting safer household environments. This project focuses on four main components: conducting a comprehensive literature search to create a timeline of human health-related discoveries linked to plastic pollution, interpreting these findings to assess their implications for household safety, developing actionable steps to minimize plastic exposure at home and communicating to the public. The goal is to equip families with practical whole home advice with special attention to kitchens, bathrooms, laundry and household cleaning. The project should conclude with recommendations for public health and communication social media messaging to promote the project findings. By synthesizing existing research and translating it into accessible recommendations, the project aims to empower families and households to make informed choices and improved practices that contribute to a healthier living environment.

Deliverables

The project will result in 1) a literature review developed with a detailed timeline that covers human health-related research concerning plastic pollution, 2) a report interpreting these findings for family and household implications, 3) a guide outlining actionable steps to reduce plastic exposure at home with suggested graphics and 4) recommendations for public health and communication social media messaging to promote the project findings. These deliverables will provide clear, evidence-based recommendations for safer household purchases and practices, ensuring that individuals can easily implement changes to minimize their family's plastic exposure.

Friends of the Earth Canada stands on guard for Mother Earth and her people — taking action to confront polluters, holding governments to account for their promises and insisting they enforce laws.

We insist that each and every resident of Canada deserves a clean, safe environment and can exercise his or her environmental rights to make it so.
We stand in solidarity with vulnerable people and communities to confront the impacts of climate change and toxic pollution.

Friends of the Earth Canada (FoE) has grown from a small group of volunteers in 1978 to one of the country’s most important voices speaking out on environmental issues. We are affiliated with the world’s largest grassroots environmental network — Friends of the Earth International — which has 70 national member groups and some 5,000 local activist groups on every continent.
