What is the main goal for this project?

NuWatt Energy, a leading name in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector, has been at the forefront of innovation in solar noise barriers for the past several years. In 2016, the company pioneered a groundbreaking solar retrofit project in Massachusetts, setting a new standard in the industry for combining solar energy production with noise abatement. Our commitment to creating a more sustainable and quieter environment has led to the ongoing development of advanced solar noise barrier solutions that not only benefit communities but also contribute to a greener future.


The aim of this project is to design and develop a prototype of a modular solar noise barrier that combines solar energy production with noise absorption characteristics. The project will focus on integrating solar panels with sheet metal components to create a modular system that is easy to assemble offsite, transport, and integrate on-site. The final deliverables will include design specifications, realistic renderings, and an analysis of the structural capacity of the modules.


Team Composition:


The team will consist of a group of students with knowledge of mechanical engineering or relevant fields. They will have experience in:

  1. Communicating with sheet metal manufacturers to understand material properties and manufacturability.
  2. Creating realistic 3D models and renderings using CAD software.
  3. Conducting structural analysis and calculations to ensure the stability and integrity of the modules.
  4. Designing modular systems that can be easily assembled and integrated on-site.


What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Tasks:

  1. Conduct research on existing solar noise barriers and identify potential improvements in design and functionality.
  2. Collaborate with sheet metal manufacturers to understand the material properties and manufacturing constraints.
  3. Develop design concepts and select the most suitable one for further development.
  4. Create detailed 3D models and realistic renderings of the chosen design.
  5. Perform structural analysis to ensure the module's structural capacity and stability.
  6. Develop assembly and integration guidelines for the modular system.
  7. Compile all design specifications, renderings, and analysis in a comprehensive report.

  1. A comprehensive report containing:
  2. a. Design specifications for the modular solar noise barrier.

  5. d. Guidelines for assembly and integration of the modular system.
  6. A presentation of the final design, including the design process, challenges faced, and potential improvements.
