- Designing workshop modules and activities to enhance leadership skills.

- Collaborating with nursing professionals to understand the specific needs of practical nurse students.

- Creating a curriculum for the workshop that aligns with the company's student-centered approach to education.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should complete the following tasks:

- A comprehensive research report on leadership development in the medical field.

- Workshop modules and activities designed to enhance leadership skills.

- Feedback from nursing professionals and practical nurse students on the workshop curriculum.

- A finalized curriculum for the leadership workshop.

Final deliverables:

- A detailed report outlining the research findings and the rationale behind the workshop design.

- Workshop modules and activities ready for implementation.

- A comprehensive curriculum for the leadership workshop.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Mentorship and Expert Guidance:

  • Staff Time: The company can allocate experienced nurses and leaders to mentor the students. These mentors would regularly meet with the students to provide guidance, feedback, and support throughout the project.
  • Leadership Talks: Arrange for guest speakers from within the company or industry leaders to talk about crucial leadership qualities, challenges, and experiences in nursing.

Access to Tools and Technology:

  • Software and Platforms: Provide access to project management and collaboration tools such as Trello, Slack, or Microsoft Teams to help students plan, execute, and communicate effectively throughout the project.
  • Technical Resources: Offer access to online resources, such as journals, books, and professional nursing websites, that can help students gather information and insights relevant to developing a leadership workshop.

Facilities and Workspaces:

  • Physical Spaces: If possible, provide a dedicated space within the company facilities where students can work together on the project. This could include meeting rooms for brainstorming sessions or access to training rooms for trial runs of their workshop.
  • Virtual Workspaces: For remote or hybrid arrangements, ensure that students have access to secure and reliable virtual meeting environments.

Access to Data and Case Studies:

  • Real-World Data: Allow students to access anonymized data from the company’s past leadership training programs or performance outcomes to help them understand the impact of effective leadership.
  • Case Studies: Provide case studies that illustrate successful leadership interventions or highlight scenarios that require critical leadership skills.

Feedback and Evaluation:

  • Regular Check-Ins: Set up regular intervals for feedback sessions where mentors can provide constructive criticism and help refine the workshop’s content and delivery.
  • Pilot Testing: Facilitate opportunities for students to conduct pilot sessions of their workshop with volunteers from the company or selected peers to gather feedback and make necessary adjustments before the final rollout.

Support for Final Presentation:

  • Presentation Tools: Provide resources such as PowerPoint, poster boards, and other necessary materials to help students prepare their final presentation of the workshop to the company’s leadership or their peers.
  • Audience Arrangement: Organize an audience comprising company staff, other students, and faculty to simulate a real workshop environment, allowing students to experience genuine feedback and engagement.

By providing these layers of support, the company helps ensure that the nursing students not only gain practical leadership skills but also experience the nuances of creating and implementing educational activities in a professional context. This holistic support greatly enhances the learning experience and prepares students for future leadership roles in nursing.

About the company

Over the last 30+ years, this private non-profit College has educated over 40,000 adult learners. Put simply, we are a student-centered institution. By this, we mean that all decisions are made in our students’ long-term best interest. We are proud to say that we have achieved among the highest student program completion rates in Alberta (over 80%) and our students have achieved higher than average marks on academic national exams.

Columbia’s unique approach to adult education is designed to help ensure that employers are able to hire individuals who are not only able to perform their duties and responsibilities but are better able to solve work-related problems, communicate more effectively, make important workplace decisions, interact more effectively as team members, and work more collaboratively with other professionals in the best interest of their internal customers (fellow employees) and external customers (patients, clients, students, and colleagues).
