What is the main goal for this project?

The primary objective of this project is to identify and secure funding opportunities through meticulous grant writing, enabling the Black Women's Institute for Health to launch and sustain impactful health programs. The grant writer will play a crucial role in our nascent organization, scanning for relevant grants and meticulously crafting applications. This position offers a unique opportunity to significantly contribute to the foundation and growth of our institute. By successfully securing grants, the writer will directly influence the development and implementation of health initiatives tailored to the needs of Black women, thereby making a lasting impact in the realm of public health and wellness.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

 Project Activities


1. Research and Identification of Grant Opportunities: Conduct comprehensive research to identify grant opportunities that align with the mission and objectives of the Black Women's Institute for Health. This involves scanning various grant databases, government websites, and other resources to find relevant health-related grants.


2. Grant Proposal Development: Once potential grants are identified, the grant writer will be responsible for the development of compelling grant proposals. This includes writing narratives, preparing budgets, and compiling necessary supporting documents.


3. Tailoring Applications to Specific Grants: Customize each grant application to meet the specific requirements and focus areas of different funding bodies. This task requires a keen understanding of the objectives of each grantor and the ability to align them with the institute's goals.


4. Liaison with Funding Agencies: Act as the primary point of contact with funding agencies. This includes submitting grant applications, responding to queries, and providing additional information as required by grantors.


5. Tracking and Reporting: Keep a detailed record of all grant applications - both pending and submitted. Regularly update the team on the status of each application and report on successes and areas for improvement.


6. Feedback Integration: Incorporate feedback from grant rejections to improve future applications. This involves analyzing rejection reasons and refining writing and strategy accordingly.


7. Compliance and Follow-Up: Ensure that all grant submissions are in compliance with the guidelines and deadlines set by the funding bodies. Post-submission, follow up with the grantors as necessary to track the progress of the applications.


8. Workshops and Continuous Learning: Participate in grant writing workshops and other continuous learning opportunities to stay updated with the latest trends and best practices in grant writing.


By accomplishing these tasks, the grant writer will play a pivotal role in securing essential funding for the Black Women's Institute for Health, thereby contributing significantly to its mission of improving health outcomes for Black women.

1. Mentorship by a Skilled Non-Profit Leader: The grant writer will be mentored by an experienced non-profit leader, who is currently the sole member of our team. This mentorship will involve regular one-on-one sessions to provide guidance, feedback, and support in navigating the non-profit landscape, particularly in the area of health advocacy for Black women.


2. Focused Training in Grant Writing: Given our current team size, we will concentrate on providing intensive, personalized training in grant writing techniques and strategies. This will be tailored to ensure the grant writer is well-equipped to handle the specific challenges of securing funding for health-related initiatives.


3. Access to Essential Tools and Software: The grant writer will have access to necessary tools, including basic grant research online platforms, Microsoft Office Suite for document preparation, and simple project management tools to organize and track grant application processes.


4. Collaborative Work Approach: Despite being a small team, we emphasize a collaborative approach. The grant writer will work closely with the non-profit leader, ensuring a cohesive strategy for grant applications and leveraging the leader’s experience for insights and advice.


5. External Resources and Networks: While we do not have an extensive internal database, we will facilitate connections with external networks and resources. This includes introducing the grant writer to relevant health advocacy groups, online forums, and communities where additional information and support can be sought.


6. Feedback and Progress Reviews: Regular progress reviews and feedback sessions will be conducted to assess the status of grant applications, with a focus on continuous improvement and adaptation to the challenges faced.


7. Professional Development Opportunities: We will strive to provide opportunities for professional growth, such as virtual workshops and webinars relevant to grant writing and non-profit management, which the grant writer can attend to enhance their skills and knowledge.


8. Adaptability and Resourcefulness: In our early stages, adaptability and resourcefulness are key. The grant writer will be encouraged to seek out and utilize various online resources, free databases, and community insights to supplement the lack of an extensive in-house database.


This support structure is designed to empower the grant writer with the necessary skills, guidance, and resources, ensuring they can effectively contribute to the growth and success of the Black Women's Institute for Health, even with our current limited team size and resources.

The Black Women's Institute for Health (BWIH) is a newly established organization dedicated to addressing the unique health challenges and disparities faced by Black women. Our mission is to advocate for, educate, and support the health and wellness of Black women through comprehensive programs, research, and policy development.

At BWIH, we understand that Black women often face unique health challenges that are compounded by systemic inequalities in the healthcare system.
