Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

We would like to create unique ID guides for children in the Nanaimo Area including native and invasive species, with illustrations or high quality photos, and designs appropriate for use in a school setting. ID guides would be themed for popular Nanaimo (British Columbia) areas, including Bowen Park, Departure Bay Beach, Colliery Dam, Buttertubs Marsh, etc. Additional content including maps, landforms, and points of cultural relevance/historical significance can also be part of this project

Nanaimo Science will share our brand design guidelines with the successful intern(s) to ensure the ID guides follow our standard designs. Production will include feedback meetings and/or written feedback with Nanaimo Science Outreach Coordinators who will also provide background information for science activities intended to pair with these guides.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

- Discussions with Nanaimo Science Outreach Coordinators on ID Guide specifications.

- Create an outline for each guide with species to be included.

- Research and reference background information on species.

- Develop draft including photos or illustrations.

- Take part in review meetings with Nanaimo Science.

- Adjust designs as needed and within the Nanaimo Science brand standards.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Nanaimo Science will provide details on what work we typically would use for ID guides and the different ranges of age that would be using the guides.

Outreach Coordinators will help with the scope of which species are of particular relevance, and provide curricular tie-ins to the BC science curriculum.

Feedback will be provided for drafts and our brand standards will also be shared to ensure that the ID guides mesh with other Nanaimo Science documents.

What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

Technical writing, science communication, design of nature guides for a general population (or specifically children), scientific illustration, project management, receiving and incorporating feedback.
