- What is the main goal for this project?

The objective for this project will be for the student to test and validate that a newly designed assay for detecting bacteria in yeast cultures is effective, user-friendly, and specific. By the end of the experience, the learner will be required to write a review of the prototype, including what should be improved upon. The learner will also have to provide a report on the test's specificity, and perform a statistical analysis to determine its limit of detection. The prototype and samples will be provided for the learner.
- What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

- The learner will have to create a review of the prototype. This includes both the physical device and the app. The learner must also research and suggest improvements.
- The learner will use the device on uninfected samples and samples from our client's manufacturing facility. They will also be provided with genomic samples to run the assay on. They will communicate the results with the client, and obtain feedback on the device.
- The learner will generate a report detailing the assay's effectiveness. This includes performing a limit of detection and limit of quantification analysis. Depending on the quality of results, an additional round of traditional PCR may be required to generate a meaningful report.

- How will you support learners in completing the project?

We will provide all of the chemicals required for the learner to succeed with the task. We will also provide facility training and anything else the learner requires (materials, gloves, tools, ect). Our Science Lead will be available for whatever question the student may have, and will oversee the student personally. Our client will provide the samples.
- What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

The applicant should have a background in basic molecular biology. Experience with PCR is a huge bonus. The applicant should also be creative and be able to come up with solutions to the problems they identify within the device.
