Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

We would like students to help us design a solar oven ( panel- battery and a grill or oven) and provide with Detailed specs/datasheet involving power ratings, battery voltage and capacity, operating hours with a single full charge of the battery, charging time of the battery, PV panel (MPPT) control (curve), grill output power rating and settings, operating and storage temperatures, altitude and humidity, power rating of the air intake vent, and airflow in CFM, size/dimensions of the PV panel, battery and grill system, any UL/IEC/CSA standards that it has to pass to be sold in the corresponding market, etc.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

To accomplish this, we expect the student(s) will:

1.Research and Requirements Gathering:

  • Identify the target market and regulatory requirements (UL/IEC/CSA standards).
  • Determine the intended use cases and environments for the product.
  • Gather customer feedback and preferences if available.

2.Define Product Specifications:

  • Specify the power requirements, including input and output power ratings.
  • Determine the required battery voltage, capacity, and chemistry suitable for the application.
  • Calculate the expected operating hours on a single full charge of the battery.
  • Define the charging time of the battery considering different charging methods (e.g., fast charging, trickle charging).
  • Specify the required PV panel specifications, including size, efficiency, and MPPT control curve.
  • Determine the grill output power rating and settings for optimal performance.

3.Environmental Considerations:

  • Determine the operating and storage temperature range for the product.
  • Specify altitude and humidity requirements, if applicable.
  • Calculate airflow requirements for cooling systems and specify the power rating of the air intake vent.
  • Define the airflow in CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) required for effective ventilation.

4.Physical Dimensions and Design:

  • Determine the size and dimensions of the PV panel, battery, and grill system.
  • Ensure that the product dimensions align with user expectations and installation requirements.
  • Consider factors such as weight, portability, and ease of installation.

5.Compliance and Certification:

  • Identify applicable safety and performance standards such as UL, IEC, or CSA.
  • Ensure that the product design meets all necessary compliance requirements.
  • Work with certification bodies to obtain necessary approvals for selling the product in the target market.
  1. Documentation and Datasheet Preparation:
  • Compile all the gathered information into a comprehensive datasheet.
  • Organize the datasheet in a clear and structured format, including tables, graphs, and technical specifications.
  • Provide detailed descriptions of each specification and parameter.
  • Include any relevant diagrams, schematics, or illustrations to aid understanding.

6.Validation and Testing:

  • Conduct thorough testing of the product to validate its performance against the specified requirements.
  • Test under various environmental conditions to ensure reliability and robustness.
  • Iterate on the design if necessary based on testing results.

7.Review and Feedback:

  • Review the datasheet internally with the design team to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Gather feedback from stakeholders, including potential customers and regulatory bodies.
  • Make revisions as needed based on feedback to improve clarity and usability

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will manage the social channels and work closely with the primary project manager who is supervising and available for questions. This will also include occasional progress meetings where adjustments to the students' tasks and duties can be made if necessary.
