mental health education character designs communication creative writing cultural diversity vocabulary illustration storytelling literacy researchThe goal of this project is to co-develop an educational, story-based children’s book series titled Luna and Flow, aimed at girls aged 9–12. The series will demystify menstruation in an age-appropriate, inclusive, and empowering way. Across three books, learners will help develop narratives focused on first periods, cycle syncing, and PMDD awareness. These books will combine relatable storytelling, culturally diverse illustrations, and scientifically-informed content. Learners will also contribute to supplementary materials like activities, exercises, and guides for educators and caregivers to foster early body literacy and emotional well-being. This project offers a unique opportunity to blend creative writing, youth education, and health communication.
Learners will contribute to the development of:
- Three illustrated, story-based books:
- Luna’s First Period – introduction to menstruation
- Luna & Flow: Understanding Your Cycle – cycle syncing and body literacy
- Luna's PMDD Adventure – emotional awareness and mental health education
- A resource toolkit for educators and caregivers
- Age-appropriate, interactive activities tied to each book (e.g., guided reflections, movement-based exercises, vocabulary-building worksheets)
- Inclusive character design and imagery guidelines
- A short presentation or summary document to showcase their research and creative decisions
Scheduled check-ins to discuss progress, address challenges, and provide feedback.
