Research Assistant

The South Asian & Tamil Womens Collective (SATWC) is a grassroot, community based organization that focuses on creating spaces for intergenerational connection, growth, and learning for South Asian and Tamil women, girls, and gender diverse communities. We do this by creating programming and events on various topics such as career development, mentorship, leadership, and well-being using an anti-oppressive and equity lens.  SATWC was recently awarded funding to conduct a two-year community-based research project focusing on the career/employment needs and realities of young South Asian & Tamil women, and gender diverse communities (ages 18 - 30) across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).  We would like to collaborate with student(s) to support the literature review process and data analysis phase of the work. The literature review process has already started, and there are key reports/articles we need support with reviewing and analyzing to create a literature review report for community members to utilize. This will involve several different steps for the students, including: Familiarizing themselves with our community based research project and the types of papers, reports, articles that we are interested in reviewing and analyzing. Reading reports, papers, articles, etc. that are relevant to our area of research (employment and career development of young racialized women and gender diverse communities) Applying the categorization scheme that we have created to classify relevant themes Summarizing important findings from reports, papers, articles, etc. Additional steps in the process would also include: Working in collaboration with researchers to draft a literature review report

Apple: Trust & Transparency Analysis

In today's digital age, trust and transparency are critical for tech companies to maintain a positive reputation and customer loyalty. Consider, the fallout between Open.AI founder Sam Altman + his founding team, Apple's "privacy first" marketing aimed to increase trust, and all the critical memes and commentary on Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook/Meta. Trust is more important than ever. This project aims to assess the current strategies employed by Apple to foster trust and transparency within its ecosystem, with some focus on new "AI" products and services (E.g. Apple Intelligence / multimodal AI). How can Apple build trust? Is AI a fraud? The goal is to identify areas of improvement and develop actionable strategies that can be practically implemented. Learners will conduct a comprehensive analysis of Apple's existing policies, product marketing/coms strategies, public statements, investments in technologies (e.g. R&D, patents). By applying a truly holistic, interdisciplinary, "systems view", the team will explore how Apple can strengthen its trust and transparency initiatives to increase user trust - compared to other companies in AI. The project will focus on closely related tasks such as policy evaluation, stakeholder analysis, and strategy development, ensuring a cohesive approach.  Existing Activities and User Experience (UX) Initiatives: Scope: Investigate current practices employed by major tech companies (e.g., Google, Meta, Microsoft) to foster trust and transparency with their users. Focus Areas: Privacy Policies and User Data Handling Transparency Reports and Data Sharing Practices User Control over Data and Settings (e.g., data portability, privacy settings) UX Design Elements that communicate trust (e.g., clarity, consent mechanisms) Deliverable: A report summarizing key trust and transparency initiatives with an evaluation of their effectiveness. Competitive Landscape Analysis: Scope: Explore the social conversation and market sentiment around trust and transparency for major tech companies, with a focus on Apple. Focus Areas: Analysis of social media conversations and public perceptions of tech companies regarding trust (e.g., privacy issues, transparency of algorithms). Assessment of public opinion data and customer reviews on transparency-related topics. Competitive benchmarking of transparency practices in the tech industry. Deliverable: A landscape analysis report highlighting trends, key concerns, and opportunities identified in the social conversation. Strategic Opportunity Identification: Scope: Identify specific strategic opportunities for Apple to strengthen its reputation for trust and transparency. Focus Areas: Recommendations for new transparency initiatives (e.g., enhanced privacy controls, user education programs). Innovations in data security and privacy that can differentiate Apple. Potential partnerships or advocacy roles that align with transparency values. Deliverable: A strategic roadmap for implementing new initiatives, including a timeline and key milestones. Organizational Capabilities Analysis: Scope: Analyze the internal capabilities required for a tech company to successfully implement and maintain trust and transparency. Focus Areas: Capabilities in data security , legal compliance , and ethical AI (measure spend, employee count, etc) Assessment of cross-functional collaboration (e.g., Product, Legal, Marketing) in trust and transparency initiatives. Comparative review of culture and leadership practices that foster transparency (e.g., openness in communication, employee training - vs. other Tech firms E.g. Microsoft. Open.AI). Deliverable: A capabilities assessment report with recommendations for strengthening internal processes and aligning them with trust-building efforts. Final Deliverables: A comprehensive report including findings, insights, and strategic recommendations. A presentation deck summarizing the key points to be reviewed by representative from Apple. An action plan for the implementation of identified strategic opportunities.
