Dr. Kaitlyn Towle is an assistant professor in the Physical Sciences Department at MacEwan University. With a focus on chemical education research, Dr. Towle’s research interests are centred around applying the cognitive processes involved in learning and memory to teaching chemistry at the post-secondary level. In her research, cognitive science is used to inform and predict teaching strategies that may improve student outcomes and increase student engagement in introductory chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry courses.
Dr Towle received her B.Sc. in Honours Chemistry from the University of Alberta. She continued at the University of Alberta to complete her Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry under the supervision of Dr. John Vederas.

Chemistry Laboratory Redesign and Testing
The main goal for the project is to redesign and test the introductory chemistry laboratories at MacEwan University- Department of Physical Sciences. This will involve several different steps for the students, including: - Analyzing the current structure and content of the introductory chemistry laboratories. - Designing a new curriculum and laboratory layout that enhances the learning experience for students. - Testing the new curriculum and laboratory layout with a focus group of students and faculty. - Making adjustments based on feedback and finalizing the redesigned laboratories.
Level Up- Graphic Design of Education Modules for Junior High Science Classrooms
The graphic design student will work towards packaging educational resources into a cohesive design that can be published and distributed to teachers across Alberta. You will use a combination of developed experimental procedures, assessments, background notes, and lesson plans to create a comprehensive booklet for educational use. This project will be conducted under the guidance of Dr. Kaitlyn Towle, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Sciences at MacEwan University.
Digitization of Ch 101 Materials- Phase 2
Cognitive science has led to a greater understanding of how people learn. The mechanics of learning have been distilled to four main stages, attention, encoding, storage and retrieval. Knowing the process of how people learn has led to new strategies in the way that educators approach teaching and learning within the classroom. Moving towards a more interactive classroom environment, has led to students taking a more active role in their learning journey. Many educators have worked towards creating innovative ways of delivering course content to enhancing the learning environment. In this project we aim to create interactive digital learning content that students can use to enhance their learning throughout a semester.
Phase 3: Knowledge Dissemination
to build relationships with the students and community partners in January, February, and March 2023.
