Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

We’ve identified a problem with food waste and how it is impacting our environment. Our city is currently grappling with an abundance of organic waste that ends up in landfills where decomposing food elevates the Greenhouse gas emissions. We have embarked on a new venture to tackle this challenge in an effort to help our city reach its 2040 net zero GHG goals while offering both consumers and businesses tools to combat food waste.

In Phase 1 of this multi-phase project, learners will create a MVP of a web-app for a food expiry date reminder. This app will help household users manage their food inventory and keep track of upcoming best-before dates in order to minimize or avoid unnecessary food waste.

Learners will be exposed to the app design, development and launch processes and their contributions will help us further advance project goals.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Tasks include: Creating web app workflows, Wireframing/Prototyping, Validation, Database Development, Front-End Development, Back-end Development, DevOps Hosting, User Testing and Deployment.

Learners will be required to implement some or all of the following features, but not limited to:

  1. User registration and authentication
  2. Implement barcode scanning and image recognition
  3. AI
  4. Permissions and access controls
  5. Serach and filters
  6. Notifications and reminders
  7. User settings
  8. Accessibility
  9. Security

At the end of the project, students will upload a PDF/Powerpoint presentation of the app's user interface and a one-two page report on it's functionality and benefits. Confidential information will be redacted.

NB. This web-app is expected to develop further when we move into Phase 2 and would be required to accommodate API integrations with existing third party systems/apps.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Learners will engage in consultation sessions with the Creative Director throughout different phases of the project to obtain guidance and direction, provide and receive feedback until completion. This may take the form of phone/video calls, email, chat channels.

What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

Learners should have experience with tools and technologies equal to OR equivalent to:

  1. HTML, CSS, JavaScript (ReactJS)
  2. Node
  3. AWS or other cloud platform
  4. Git, Express.js, Mongoose (MongoDB)
  5. TensorFlow or PyTorch
  6. WebSocket
  7. JWT tokens
  8. GraphQL

Experience with Artificial Intelligence is a great asset as this is a critical component for the app.

Other desired skills: conducting research and user testing
