We have a suite of in-development products — each designed to prevent harm before it escalates — and we are looking for a team of engineering students to choose one and take it forward.
This project is ideal for students who want to critically engage with real-world social challenges using engineering, design, and AI-based innovation. You’ll get to explore complex human factors (like trust, emotion, manipulation, safety), while applying your technical skills in areas such as product development, systems design, UX research, and AI integration.
The Listening Lab
A digital group wellness project that simulates the emotional benefits of therapy through art-enhanced conversational roles. Students could:
- Prototype a web or mobile app
- Explore how AI agents could support facilitation
- Design privacy-first infrastructure for peer matching
ChatBoy: Manipulation Training App
A language-based game that teaches users how to spot manipulative communication. Students could:
- Build NLP models to detect coercive language
- Improve app UX or gamification features (it is currently a simple Web App, and we want to make this more of an interactive chatbot)
- Train new datasets using simulated roleplay
P2P Cybersecurity Awareness product for university students
A live workshop system that assesses digital safety risks and offers custom guidance. Students could:
- Design a secure scoring/reporting system
- Automate booth matching or score adjustment workflows
- Build accessible dashboards for non-tech users
- Create app to do scheduling and mini educational modules.
Blind Spot Assessment Tool
A personal diagnostic tool that helps users identify gaps in social discernment and susceptibility to manipulation. Students could:
- Analyze user scoring logic
- Build an interactive assessment interface
- Evaluate data visualization options for personal growth
AI Research Lab (Suna)
FIA is building a knowledge base to train AI agents to detect coercive patterns. Students could:
- Build structured taxonomies of behavioral traits
- Evaluate the use of LangChain or Neo4j to build knowledge agents
- Run feasibility studies on cross-platform integrations
Student Experience:
Each team/student will:
- Choose a focus area based on their skills/interests
- Work with real designs, research, and partially-built prototypes
- Propose improvements, extensions, or redesigns
- Tackle ambiguity and shape their own direction with mentorship
