Details

Enhancing understanding of measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) techniques for geologic carbon dioxide storage drives this project. As the world races to reduce climate change, capture and storage of CO2 emerges as a key strategy. Questions persist about the safety of carbon storage. MMV ensures the safety, effectiveness, and credibility of geologic carbon sequestration projects while advancing technology and its acceptance as a climate change mitigation strategy.

The project involves researching one of the main CCS storage monitoring techniques, seismic. The goal is to understand seismic survey methods, costs, and alternatives to track CO2 movement underground.

  • Compare traditional 2D and 3D seismic survey methods with emerging alternatives
  • Analyze cost structure of the different seismic survey techniques
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of alternative methods
  • Note environmental impacts of different survey methods

By focusing on these aspects, the project aims to contribute valuable insights to the field of geologic carbon sequestration and its role in mitigating climate change.

Students will apply their research skills and any subsurface or environmental knowledge.
