The WIL office at George Brown supports Experiential Learning on campus. Experiential Learning in an umbrella term used to cover all of the opportunities available to students to take part in sector-specific learning experiences. These opportunities can take place in a variety of settings including workplaces, simulation facilities, labs, shops, and studios in both educational, workplace and practice environments. They are a chance for students to experience their field or industry and learn what’s expected of them before graduating.

Graphic Designer
One Student Position AvailablePosition: Graphic Designer, George Brown College, Corporate Communications Department.Preference will be given to applicants from George Brown CollegeThe Graphic Designer will work with George Brown College’s internal communications team to develop creative and innovative graphics to help communicate progress on the college’s Vision 2030 / Strategy 2022 initiative, by presenting complex information and data in a visually compelling way.The role will be primarily responsible for storytelling through infographics. Virtual Event Management for Ontario Museums
Students required: 4 groups of 5 studentsGeorge Brown College is partnering with Ontario Museum Association to assist museums in Ontario on their digital transformation journey. There are 700 museums in Ontario, small and large and a variety of different focuses. Some museums have never done virtual events before, others have experimented with the use of virtual events, particularly during COVID19 restrictions. They are using virtual events for online lectures, webinars or fundraising events. It is likely that the use of virtual events will continue in a post-COVID19 environment. Online events are important to museum digitalization strategy to improve museums brand presence and drive visitors both online and offline. We are seeking virtual event managers do an environment scan on the use of virtual events by museums in Ontario and create a best practices How To Manual for Virtual Event management for museums in Ontario. Students will also recommend, plan, organize, implement and evaluate virtual events for selected museums in Ontario. Our objective is to achieve inclusion and help museums across Ontario build awareness of the stories of Canada's heritage and use online channels to promote an integrated visitor experience for museums in Ontario - both online and offline. The project will include the following:Conduct and evaluation of the use of virtual events by museums in Ontario and identify best practices for virtual events. Developing a high-level calendar of events, reflecting the museums vision/mission, including theme and graphic design. Assist in outreach and content creation for the promotion of the events including preparing written copy for event promotion (e.g. speaker bios, brief descriptions of event, etc.)Promote the event through email blasts, social media and event listing websites as tools to increase attendance/ticket sales and use photos/videos from the online event to create digital content for website and social media platforms after the event. Event Implementation will include outline the event and content creation, developing brief outlines of individual events, secure guest speakers/talent for the eventsDesign post-event conversion of participants to onsite museum visitors. Identify and Develop sponsorship/partnership opportunities based on their contactsConduct post-event evaluation and tabulating results including effectiveness of outreach. Consolidate lessons learned into a Handbook for Implementing Virtual Events for Museums in Ontario. Assignments will be structured into 80 hour gigs based on the expertise of the students and the phase that the project is in when the student comes on board. This is a great project for students to prove their event management and digital marketing expertise to future employers, as the impact of their work on this project can be easily measured and communicated.
Data Analytics Assistant - Digitalization of Ontario Museums
Number of students required: 8 individual students that may work in teamsPost-Secondary School (college or university) students and recent graduates can sign up to volunteer for Analytics Assignments in support of the OMA Digitalization Readiness Research Project. This data project will focus on starting to build a database of publicly available data for Museums in Ontario. It will involve open data sources, continued development of an assessment tool for museum digitalization and the Ontario Museums Digitalization Index, web analytics for the museums sector and individual museums.The information collected, analyzed, and reported will inform OMA’s Digitalization Readiness strategic planning initiatives.The research assistants will support the research initiatives under the guidance of research faculty and professionals from data and heritage sector. Areas of inquiry include: Digitalization, Heritage Sector, Tourism, Culture. The position requires skills in data retrieval and manipulation, empirical methods, and data display.The project may include, but is not limited to:Overseeing complex data collection, manipulation, and data storage.Planning and performing the outlines and looking after data retrieval (eg, data scraping) and analysis (eg, big data analysis) using existing tools and methods.Responsible for complex tasks in relation to data retrieval and analysis.Working with senior level in the design and execution of empirical tests. Supports the project/study by surveying literature and using existing tools to generate data.Conducting literature reviews and contributing to the development of research projects.Writing reports and assisting with writing grant applications in terms of conceptualization and articulation.This Level UP Project will be broken down into Data Build/Clean Up, Development, Prototyping, Operationalizing, Knowledge Dissemination and will include Secondary Research, Literature Report, Research Proposal Writing, Quantitative Research and Report Writing depending on the interest, learning objectives and skills of the participants.
Market Analysis - Readiness for Digitalization of Museums in Ontario
Number of individual students required: total of 4 students that will work individually but also collaborate with their colleaguesGeorge Brown College is partnering with Ontario Museum Association to get a better understanding of how our Museums in Ontario are positioned for digitalization and how digitalization will transform the museum visitor and employee experiences. We want to understand how digitalization affects the perception of the museum brands in Ontario and can be leveraged as a competitive advantage as museums look to recover from COVID19 restrictions. We want to understand how digitalization is transforming how museums manage their collections, present and communicate their stores and engage audiences both online and offline, what are the most beneficial tools for museums, what opportunities and constraints do digital technologies present for museums. How will digitalization influence the museum of the future for both museum visitors but also for the employees and volunteers at museums. The information collected will inform OMA’s Digitalization Readiness strategic planning initiatives.This project will include:Conduct a market assessment of museums readiness for digitalizationCreate a Digitalization Continuum and best practices for moving museums through the continuum.How museums compete with other educational and leisure activity options Segment museums in Ontario into peer groups, with a framework that identifies features that are shared by highly digitalized museums vs. those that are less digitalized. Identify best practices for digitalization and the benefits of digitalization in branding for museums. We will give you access to industry data to support this project such as personnel, website analytics, open source data, sales and brand collateral, and more. There are 700+ Museums in Ontario. ObjectiveWe hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of the digitalization of museums in Canada and identify best practices for museums in their digitalization journey.
