George Brown College is partnering with Ontario Museum Association to get a better understanding of how our Museums in Ontario are positioned for digitalization and how digitalization will transform the museum visitor and employee experiences. We want to understand how digitalization affects the perception of the museum brands in Ontario and can be leveraged as a competitive advantage as museums look to recover from COVID19 restrictions.
We want to understand how digitalization is transforming how museums manage their collections, present and communicate their stores and engage audiences both online and offline, what are the most beneficial tools for museums, what opportunities and constraints do digital technologies present for museums. How will digitalization influence the museum of the future for both museum visitors but also for the employees and volunteers at museums.
The information collected will inform OMA’s Digitalization Readiness strategic planning initiatives.
This project will include:
- Conduct a market assessment of museums readiness for digitalization
- Create a Digitalization Continuum and best practices for moving museums through the continuum.
- How museums compete with other educational and leisure activity options
- Segment museums in Ontario into peer groups, with a framework that identifies features that are shared by highly digitalized museums vs. those that are less digitalized.
- Identify best practices for digitalization and the benefits of digitalization in branding for museums.
We will give you access to industry data to support this project such as personnel, website analytics, open source data, sales and brand collateral, and more. There are 700+ Museums in Ontario.
Objective
We hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of the digitalization of museums in Canada and identify best practices for museums in their digitalization journey.
Students are expected to work independently for this project. Students will participate in weekly meetings with Faculty, Heritage, and Marketing professionals for briefings on sector information related to digitalization of museums, for project updates and knowledge sharing within the project team.
