- Develop a Comprehensive Handbook: Create a participant handbook that clearly outlines services, policies, and procedures for individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Ensure Accessibility and Clarity: Ensure that the handbook is accessible to individuals with various developmental disabilities through easy-to-read language, visually appealing design considerations.
- Align with Best Practices: Align the handbook with best practices in disability services, human rights, and person-centered care.
- Enhance Understanding: Ensure that individuals and their caregivers fully understand the services provided, their rights, responsibilities, and the support they can expect from Resilient Hearts.
Phase 1: Research and Discovery
Objective: To gather information on best practices in creating materials for individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Review participant handbooks from similar organizations.
- Conduct interviews with individuals with developmental disabilities, caregivers, and professionals in the field to understand key needs if possible.
- Research best practices for accessible communication, including language, format, and design.
- Understand the legal and ethical considerations in disability services.
Phase 2: Content update
Objective: To develop clear, concise, and comprehensive content for the handbook.
- Review current handbook and draft sections covering key areas such as:
- Overview of Resilient Hearts.
- Description of services offered (e.g., adult day program, community support, etc.).
- Rights and responsibilities of participants (this will be provided)
- Policies on safety, confidentiality, and inclusion.
- Steps to access services and supports.
- Ensure all language is person-centered, accessible, and free of jargon.
- Seek feedback from stakeholders (individuals with disabilities, families, and staff) if possible.
Phase 3: Accessibility Design
Objective: To design the handbook in a way that is accessible to individuals with varying levels of understanding and abilities.
- Incorporate visual aids (e.g., icons, pictures) to support understanding.
- Use larger fonts and clear contrast for better readability.
- Include a variety of formats, such as physical, digital, and audio versions if possible.
Phase 4: Finalization
Objective: To finalize the participant handbook.
- Create final revisions based on feedback by project manager.
- Seek feedback from individuals and families and incorporate it into the final deliverables if applicable.
Deliverables:
- A Complete Participant Handbook: Ready for use by Resilient Hearts, in digital formats.
- An Accessibility Report: Outlining the steps taken to ensure accessibility and feedback from user testing if applicable.
- Presentation: A final presentation showcasing the process, findings, and final handbook to Resilient Hearts.
Providing access to necessary tools, software, and resources required for project completion.
Scheduled check-ins to discuss progress, address challenges, and provide feedback.
