Details

Elementary mathematics educators to-be will support your organization in a curriculum design project in the STEM/STEAM space. These students are prepared to facilitate the learning of mathematics in a constructivist environment through the use of investigations, manipulatives, technology, and holistic forms of assessment. Current trends in teaching mathematics are emphasized, with particular attention to documents created by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM).

Project Examples

Beginning in September, students in groups of 3-5 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.

Project examples that students can complete may include, but are not limited to:

  • Learning how to design and teach high-quality lesson plans that use the curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment methods that will help students meet the NCTM and/or state standards.
  • Becoming knowledgeable about and confident in their ability to use and teach with hands-on and online mathematical resources, materials, tools, and manipulatives available.
  • Developing an understanding of developmental levels and differentiated instruction so that they can identify where their students are mathematically, where they need to go, and how to build upon their knowledge base to get them where they need to be.
  • Understanding the importance of including diverse, culturally-rich mathematics literature in the classroom and throughout the curriculum.
  • Learning how to help students connect mathematical ideas to real life through the use of authentic mathematics problem-solving experiences and authentic assessment.
  • Describing and evaluating a wide variety of approaches to sparking a love of mathematics in future students.
  • Developing an understanding of how to enrich and support the math curriculum through the use of technology tools.
  • Designing and incorporating different technologies when planning, creating, and facilitating mathematics activities and lessons.

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
