Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

We are a performing stiltwalking company and summer is our busiest time. We are in need of workers to help us prepare and present our performance season. We are in need of people to help with our booking campaign, securing gigs, as well as people with sewing and theatrical production experience to help maintain costumes and prepare gig packs, as well as accompany performers as support during gigs. We are also in need of people to help with the day to day office tasks associated with a working not for profit company. Also have a fundraising campaign coming up that could use a good grant writer and copyist to help secure funds for future projects. Finally we are looking for a website and social media coordinator to help with developing and maintaining our online presence.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Th public out reach persons tasks will include maintaining and updating our client database, as well as learning our phone recruitment script and working with the AD to secure and manage contracts. They will need to have good phone skills and well as be fluent with database management and basic contracting processes.

The Costumer will need to be fluent in working with sewing machines and other craft tools to maintain and repair costumes and gear. They will also be responsible for assembling and unpacking performance kits, including costumes and props, in addition to cleaning and repairing when required.

The fundraiser will need to have good copy writing skills and well as working with online systems and various government online platforms.

The website and social media person would need to be familiar with wordpress and most of the various social media platforms including Hootsuite.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

We have been in operation for over 23 years and have worked with many people in that time, including training many performers and mentoring people in various staff positions from general manager to grant writer to video director, to tour manager and even historian. For the past 7 years we have been part of the Canada Summer jobs program and have mentored between 3-14 students each summer in that time. some have stayed on or returned, and many have gone on to have prosperous careers in the larger job market. Our students get hands on experience with the real working tools of running a successful performing arts company and the supervision and guidance of the artistic director who has over 40 years of experience in the industry.

About the company

In 2001, the city of Edmonton, Alberta hosted the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) World Games. As part of the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies for this major sporting event, award winning creator Randall Fraser trained, equipped, costumed the stilt element with a team of 50 people of eclectic backgrounds, ages and interests.
In the two decades since, NSC has grown to cultivate a community of enthusiastic stiltwalkers. Run by Fraser, NSC has its own studio space, Stilthalla, open for performances, recordings and learning to stilt walk.
