What is the main goal for this project?

About us: Canadian Herstory is a multi-faceted empowerment platform that focuses on sharing the stories of women in Canadian history to spread awareness of gender inequality and inspire future generations. We received not-for-profit status in May 2021 and originally began by creating short educational videos about women in Canadian history as a method to inspire a younger age during a time of heightened social media use and reduced classroom time. Today, we are creating an online Canadian women's encyclopedia to offer a place for cohesive further education. While we continue to make short videos, we feel they limit our ability to educate and would prefer to keep them going as a tool to create interest in Canadian women's history while offering a starting place for further research. While Canadian encyclopedias exist, we feel many lack gender and racial inclusivity. Canadian Herstory is building a website with an online encyclopedia to fill that gap and offer further information easily understood by a younger generation.

Your Role: As we are creating the online encyclopedia, we are always seeking writers to join our team of volunteers. Your primary role will be writing entries for the encyclopedia. In this role, you will be assigned a Canadian woman and will be required to research and write a short entry including a brief biography and details about her contribution to Canadian history. You must be able to write with footnotes in Chicago citation style with a youth-friendly diction. Ideally, each entry will be between 500 - 1000 words though you can write longer if you feel necessary. Our aim is to create a SparkNotes-inspired encyclopedia on Canadian women's history that is easily digestible and understood by Canadian youth ages 12-18.

Expectations: We are looking for someone who can type 2-4 entries per month; however, this can be adjusted more or less per the availability. Based on the tracked hours for other volunteers on our team, an entry should take between 2-4 hours.

Tools Required: As this is an online position, you must have your own computer, sufficient internet access and Microsoft word or google docs for writing the entries.

Skills: Intermediate writing skills and research ability.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

As an Entry Writer you will be primarily on your own for writing and research; however, you will have our directors email and can arrange online scheduled meetings as necessary.
