Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

The South Asian & Tamil Womens Collective (SATWC) is a grassroot, community based organization that focuses on creating spaces for intergenerational connection, growth, and learning for South Asian and Tamil women, girls, and gender diverse communities. We do this by creating programming and events on various topics such as career development, mentorship, leadership, and well-being using an anti-oppressive and equity lens.

SATWC was recently awarded funding to conduct a two-year community-based research project focusing on the career/employment needs and realities of young South Asian & Tamil women, and gender diverse communities (ages 18 - 30) across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

We would like to collaborate with student(s) to support the literature review process and data analysis phase of the work. The literature review process has already started, and there are key reports/articles we need support with reviewing and analyzing to create a literature review report for community members to utilize.

This will involve several different steps for the students, including:

  • Familiarizing themselves with our community based research project and the types of papers, reports, articles that we are interested in reviewing and analyzing.
  • Reading reports, papers, articles, etc. that are relevant to our area of research (employment and career development of young racialized women and gender diverse communities)
  • Applying the categorization scheme that we have created to classify relevant themes
  • Summarizing important findings from reports, papers, articles, etc.

Additional steps in the process would also include:

  • Working in collaboration with researchers to draft a literature review report
What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should demonstrate:

  • Understanding of our area of research and the purpose of our project
  • Understanding and categorization of relevant studies
  • Summarization of important information

Additional steps would include:

  • Assisting in the writing of a literature review report
  • Collaborating with a research team

Final deliverables should include

  • A final literature review report

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide support, guidance and answers to questions such as:

  • Our research projects
  • Current understanding of our field of research
  • Input on choices, problems or anything else the students might encounter.

Students will be listed as contributing members to the research team on the literature report, and be invited to participate in upcoming research activities (i.e. knowledge mobilization events, etc.)
