Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

With reference to the current scenario of industries facing lots of problems of storage of tools, handling of tools, Industries are wasting lot of valuable time in searching the right tool to do the maintenance. A single unit of machine or assembly is having different types of bolts nuts and screws etc which need different type of tools for fixing and maintenance and assembly purpose. For fastening and loosening a hex head bolt, a bolt may be fastened and loosened by rotating the handle of the spanner in one direction. Thus, whenever rotated using said spanner, spanner has to be detached from the hexagon cavity of the bolt head combined with the hexagonal head thereof. Thereafter, the combining position is adjusted, and the work is repeated which fits and rotates the hex head bolt. As mentioned above, there are inconveniences in use. Since most sizes of the bolt insert grooves in the spanner heads are fixed according to the sizes of the hex head bolt, the spanner which corresponds to the size of the bolt head must be prepared so that the preparation or use of the spanner becomes inconvenient. Also, for the job maintenance at the height will be become more difficult when u have to carry lots of tools with weight, same way some time for the machinery erection and commissioning its very inconvenience where some odd size of bolts or nuts to be fix where shops are not closer to the industry. To operate unit, it requires lot of tooling to operator. There are no tools available which had all features which can operate bolts and nuts, screws, hexagon head bolts, wires and rods cutter, cutter, plier, etc . The development of self-adjustment and ratchet action tools aims to enhance efficiency, safety, and ease of use in various applications, particularly in mechanical, automotive, and construction industries. These tools are designed to automatically adjust to different sizes and shapes of fasteners while providing a ratcheting mechanism for continuous and precise tightening or loosening. The primary challenge lies in designing a self-adjusting mechanism that can reliably accommodate a wide range of fastener sizes and shapes without compromising performance or durability. This requires overcoming engineering hurdles related to material selection, mechanism design, and manufacturing processes.

Adaptive Mechanism Design: Develop a mechanism that can automatically adjust to various fastener sizes and shapes, ensuring a secure grip without damaging the fastener or the tool itself.

Ratcheting Action: Implement a smooth and reliable ratcheting mechanism that enables users to apply consistent torque in both tightening and loosening operations.

Durability and Reliability: Ensure that the tool can withstand repeated use under demanding conditions without compromising performance or accuracy.

Ergonomics and User-Friendliness: Design the tool with ergonomic features to minimize user fatigue and maximize comfort during prolonged use.

Cost-Effectiveness: Balance the development costs with the need to produce the tool at a competitive price point without sacrificing quality or performance.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

We initiated experimentation by attempting to develop a mechanism to have Ratchet action and self adjusting tool which can grip the Hex head bolts with proper tork and non slipping during the tightening and loosening functions.

To achieve this, we are having some mechanism as experiments on baxic concept of Geneva mechanism or Rack and pinion mechanism for increasing gripping during the function of tightening and loosening.

Attempt 1:- Rack and pinion mechanism

An easy to understand yet efficient method of converting rotary motion into linear motion is the rack and pinion system. The mechanism must be made to offer both regulated, gradual changes and smooth, continuous motion in the context of ratchet action and self-adjustment. We are designing the same two parts to be used in the Fix and Moving jaw in order to improve the grip of the fastening element during the tightening and loosening function. These components belong in the Rack and Pinion category. When the across flat size is greater than 16 mm, the requirement is met; however, when the across flat size is less, further study is necessary to enhance proper gripping during the tightening and loosening operations. Spiral springs on one side of the components may be used to overcome the self-adjustment issue.

Attemp 2 Geneva Mechanism

The Geneva mechanism is frequently encountered in applications requiring precise indexing and is commonly employed for intermittent rotating motion. To get the required functionality in the context of self-adjustment and ratchet action, we would need to experiment with various setups.

Both mechanisms offer unique advantages and challenges when it comes to self-adjustment and ratchet action. we would need to conduct thorough trials and experiments to optimize the design for specific applications and requirements.

Attamp 3:- Sprag Mechanism

A sprag mechanism is a kind of mechanical device that permits motion in one direction while impeding motion in the other. It is sometimes referred to as a freewheel or an overrunning clutch. When a mechanism must engage and transmit power in a single direction while being free to rotate freely in the opposing direction without transmitting power, this technique is frequently used. It functions somewhat like a ratchet because of this.

On the other hand, a ratchet is a mechanical tool that prevents motion in the opposite direction while permitting continuous linear or rotary motion in one direction. Usually, it is made up of a toothed wheel (or gear) and a pawl that engages the wheel's teeth to permit travel in one direction while obstructing it in another.

About the company

CPM Industries is the brainchild of Mr. Anand Mundhava, a Mechanical Engineer by profession. During his career spanning 25 years in various engineering companies, it struck him that these companies are investing a huge amount of money in various tool inventories. Mr. Mundhava was determined to shoulder the responsibility of solving this acute problem. He came up with a concept to design and develop a single, multi-purpose tool that would cater to all general maintenance needs. To actualize this dream, which he felt was a handsome opportunity, he resigned from his managerial designation in a multi-national company having a presence in the US, UK, and India.
Post-resignation, Mr. Mundhava completely dedicated himself to innovative engineering. His failures did not deter him from further diligence. He had an ever-increasing zeal to develop a tool that should be self-adjustable and should be usable to tighten and loosen Hex head bolts from 6 to 25 mm.
Mr. Mundhava’s team’s research and development activities have resulted in competitive products as regards quality and performance and a boundless knowledge for the design and development of high-performance, multi-purpose hand tools. After overcoming 300 failed attempts, the team eventually achieved the rare distinction of being the first manufacturer in the world to develop a 55-in-1, self-adjustable tool, termed as the CRAB. This tool promises heavy-duty, long-lasting reliability for several repair tasks. It can be easily accommodated in a toolbox, glove compartment, or emergency kit. It has application in several industries such as Aerospace, Automotive, Engineering, Household Maintenance, Boating and Gardening Equipment maintenance, among others.
To copyright the tool, Mr. Mundhava completed the design registration and trademark registration. At this juncture, he laid the foundation of CPM Industries. The company had filed the patent for CRAB at the national and international levels. The company has now emerged as a specialist of innovative, multi-purpose hand tools and is acknowledged as a professional brand.
The company had manufactured a pilot batch of a finite number of tools for testing and market response. It received a very promising response at the global level. Further, it began the batches of commercial production. It continues its investment in manufacturing and wants to continue its position as a favorite tool supplier of customers.
CPM Industries is being showered with awards for its innovative product, CRAB. Some of the recent awards are the following:
