Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

Meijer has identified a weakness in their stocking procedures, leading to popular stock not remaining on the shelf during peak shopping hours. Their current system is not efficient enough to keep up with the stocking needs. The Director of Adrian Meijer, Ben Negron, recognizes that this weakness does not only negatively impact store sales it negatively impacts customers. This weakness could force loyal customers to complete their shopping at a competitor's store, making them take the time to shop at more than one store to find all needed items. If not fixed, this could eventually lead to losing a percentage of those loyal customers altogether.

Student teams will have the opportunity to focus on utilizing data to uncover store performance gaps like keeping top-selling items in stock. They will partner with store leadership to:

  • Analyze data on key performance metrics like sales, inventory turnover, etc.
  • Identify issues contributing to underperformance
  • Research and develop proposed solutions to address issues

Student teams will analyze issues, identify solutions, and provide leadership with an action plan to implement recommendations for optimizing operations and sales. This action plan will include a written proposal and formal presentation that will be provided to Meijer leadership on May 3rd, 2024.

Meijer will receive 1-3 proposed solutions that will aim to increase sales of top items previously missing from shelves and support higher customer retention/satisfaction.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?
  • Tour the full layout of the store including stock rooms and customer side of store. This can be done in person or virtually. Students should be prepared to ask questions while on the tour.
  • Analyze data regarding key performance metrics provided by Meijer store leadership
  • Analyze current store stocking procedures
  • Interview appropriate store personnel
  • Conduct research based on any gaps in the data already gathered.
  • Determine the root cause/causes for the shelves not remaining stocked during peak hours
  • Brainstorm and vet best possible solutions.
  • Develop an action plan in the form of a proposal promoting 1-3 solutions
  • Present proposal to employer as a formal presentation
How will you support learners in completing the project?

The employer will provide a guided tour, either virtually or in person, of the store. This tour will include both the customer and employee side. In addition to the tour, students will be provided a layout of the store, have access to leadership and appropriate staff to interview and ask questions of, as well as data that the stores leadership is able to provide.

In addition, the Clearinghouse will be available to provide support to student teams as needed.
