Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

Mpowa Impact as an organisation has a mission objective to reduce / eliminate GBV and abuse of women and children everywhere we operate.

In order to inform our strategy and priorities on this task, we devised a project to map out the current situation with GBV across the African continent by means of creating and populating a framework of various maturity level indicators which should be defined and then we run a data survey project/competition to gather all the input data from every country and compile into the platform.

We have already scoped out the project in outline, and had preliminary discussions with a data science partner (Zindi) with the scale to support such a data gathering project via their extended network of thousands of data scientists.

Expectation of the project is to work with us to pilot the GBV data analysis and capture for 1 country (Kenya), document and present the results for internal discussion and fine tuning and assist with launching the larger data capture competition with Zindi to scale up the data acquisition, but we do not expect this to be completed in 3 months.

We would like to collaborate with students to support our interview process by assisting in data collection and verification of results. This will provide us with prepared datasets that are ready for further analysis.

This will involve several different steps for the students, including:

  • Primary research on critical factors affecting GBV (cultural/social, educational, economic, legal) and define an objective and (grounded in prior academic research) KPI scoring system
  • Familiarizing themselves with interview procedures and participating in training activities.
  • Assisting researchers in contacting participants and setting up interviews.
  • Recording, organizing, and storing results according to conventions.
  • Verifying that data is recorded accurately.
  • Cleaning data to ensure consistency and usability.
  • Suggesting new research questions or modifications to improve the interview process.
What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should demonstrate:

  • Understanding of the project and interview process
  • Documentation and organization of data
  • Verification of data accuracy

Bonus steps would include:

  • Cleaning data for future analyses
  • Suggesting improvements to the interview procedure

Final deliverables should include

  • A final report.
How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:

  • Our research projects
  • Current understanding of our field of research
  • Input on choices, problems or anything else the students might encounter.
What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

In order to complete this project, students can self-teach, but it is beneficial to be familiar with:

  • Research ethics
  • Quantitative versus qualitative data collection methods

Nice to haves for students include

  • Knowledge of data collection tools like Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of online meeting tools like Skype, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom

Again, students can complete this project without any of the prior knowledge listed here. Students will be expected to research and learn more about the above as the project goes along.

We are striving towards People Planet and Profit.

Our goal is to eliminate the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

We believe the best way to do this is to empower leaders on the ground in the global south. These 'Heroes' in their communities understand what's required to make the greatest social impact and climate change to the people around them.

To demonstrate our commitment to economic empowerment, we matchmake these change makers and their projects to businesses through a sponsorship platform called Impactivator. This initial sponsorship supports the Hero through an online training program. This is an opportunity to de-risk their project and create economic empowerment (including ethical sourcing). Our Heroes and their vetted projects are subsequently platformed on Decarbonizer, for donations from the public.

Because we believe in transparency, all projects are monitored and have regular qualitative updates.

Projects come in many different shapes and sizes from Gender Based Violence in Kenya to Regenerative Agriculture in South Africa. Our framework is robust enough to innovate scalable best practice and flexible enough to be responsive without losing integrity. Our approach is holistic.

We are underpinned by best in class clean technology solutions via 3rd party providers.

Our program is designed to help members plan appropriate interventions, capacity build and create long term technical, social and economic empowerment. We encourage our Heroes to connect with established local trusted NGOs and partners.
