Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

To design a mechanical system (including 3D CAD renders & piping schedules) for a state-of-the-art magnesium reactor that produces hydrogen and electricity.

The product heats up a standard graphite or steel crucible with a minimum volume of 0.0188 m3 each to 1345 degrees Celsius through an electrical heating element to superheat and smelt magnesium metal. Liquid carbon dioxide or any other suitable fire retardant is sent into the smelter to avoid auto-ignition.

Water is superheated to vapour and also funnelled into the reaction chamber to produce hydrogen. This production of steam will then be sustained by the waste heat generated from the reaction.

There will be 359.9kJ of heat emitted by the reaction per mole of Mg reacted, one must recycle this heat to generate electricity most cheaply and efficiently possible (through an appropriate thermodynamics cycle)

The hydrogen generated through this reaction must be captured and separated from any potential fire retardant gas. The hydrogen also must be passed through a filter and funnelled to a small fuel cell downstream.

The device stores the electricity generated through heat in an internal battery to provide initial energy for the start-up of the system. The instrumentation of the device and the load should be powered by the remaining electricity generated through the thermodynamics cycle in parallel with the fuel cell.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Design mechanical engineering drawings, including CAD renders of various compartments and isometric drawings, selecting appropriate thermodynamics cycle and refrigerant, conducting energy balance and developing a preliminary bill of material.

The device also needs to be able to monitor voltage and Amp produced, as well as other relevant internal statuses of the power supply system. Therefore electrical knowledge is also preferred.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

To support learners in completing the project, we will begin by providing a thorough explanation of the project background to ensure a clear understanding of the objectives and context. Additionally, we will offer comprehensive training on hydrogen technologies to familiarize learners with the principles and applications relevant to the project. Throughout the project, we will provide guidance on metrics and performance indicators to track progress effectively. Learners will have access to relevant data sources to facilitate their research and analysis. Our approach will prioritize a hands-off model, allowing learners to maximize their autonomy while ensuring safety and minimizing costs..
