Project scope
- What is the main goal for this project?
-
We would like to collaborate with students to apply the latest artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to our existing dataset. Students will refine an existing ML model related to the data collected from open source wildfires and emissions in the United States, and develop an AI application to communicate the intensity of upcoming dangers.
This will involve several different steps for the students, including:
- Thoroughly reviewing the existing datasets, the wrangled data, and the existing model
- Analyzing the deficiencies of the current model
- Researching the latest AI / ML techniques to refine the model
- Developing an enhanced model which maximizes accuracy and predicts the best insights from our data
- Incorporating the model into a user friendly application to be shared with audience of multiple demographics
- What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?
-
By the end of the project, students should demonstrate:
- Understanding of the available dataset
- Understanding of the most suitable AI / ML techniques
- Utilizing a ML technique to address a real world problem
Bonus steps would include:
- Providing insights into utilizing the developed application to convince climate policy changes
Final deliverables should include
- A final report on the application developed to address the problem, the ML model, methodologies used to enhance the outcomes, and recommended next steps.
- Source materials such as code and workbooks

- How will you support learners in completing the project?
-
Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will keep weekly meetings and close communications in order for students to stay on track and meet milestones.
We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:
- Our current products and applications of AI / ML
- The current data set and guidance in navigating it
- Current industry standard approaches to AI / ML
- Application design and requirements
- Input on choices, problems or anything else the students might encounter.
