Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

To design an electrical system (including line diagram & circuit diagram) for a state-of-the-art magnesium reactor that produces hydrogen.


The product heats up 2 standard graphite crucibles with a volume of 0.00348 m3 each to 1345 degrees Celsius through an electrical heating element to superheat and smelt magnesium metal. There are 4.196 kg of 99.99% pure magnesium metal pellets with 3mm diameter in each reactor. Water will be injected into the reactor through 2 atomizers.


There will be 359.9kJ of heat emitted by the reaction per mole of Mg reacted, one must recycle this heat to generate electricity most cheaply and efficiently possible.


Hydrogen is generated through this reaction and the gas must be captured, passed through a filter and funneled to a 10kW fuel cell downstream.


The device stores the electricity generated through heat and co-powers the load in parallel with the fuel cell.


What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Design electrical engineering drawings, including circuit and line diagrams and preliminary bill of materials and sizing needed.


The device also needs to be able to monitor voltage and Amp produced, as well as other relevant internal statuses of the power supply system.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

To support learners in completing the project, we will begin by providing a thorough explanation of the project background to ensure a clear understanding of the objectives and context. Additionally, we will offer comprehensive training on hydrogen technologies to familiarize learners with the principles and applications relevant to the project. Throughout the project, we will provide guidance on metrics and performance indicators to track progress effectively. Learners will have access to relevant data sources to facilitate their research and analysis. Our approach will prioritize a hands-off model, allowing learners to maximize their autonomy while ensuring safety and minimizing costs..
