This project challenges learners to creatively blend visual artistry and user experience design to develop a unified visual style that enhances storytelling and deeply engages players. By designing a range of assets—from character concepts and user-interface elements to rich environmental backdrops—the team will create an immersive experience that elevates the game while providing valuable real-world practice for emerging talent. Participants will have the chance to apply and expand their classroom skills, gaining experience that paves the way for successful careers in the gaming industry—all in a supportive, creatively charged environment.
Initial Concept Exploration:
- Mood Boards & Visual Research: Create several mood boards that capture the visual tone, colour schemes, and inspiration drawn from both urban landscapes and gaming aesthetics.
- Preliminary Sketches: Produce rough sketches that explore different visual directions for characters, environments, and user interface elements.
- Asset-Specific Designs:
- Character Designs: Develop initial character concept sketches (including multiple angles if needed) and refine them into polished digital illustrations that embody personality and style aligned with the game’s story.
- Environment & Level Art: Create background art for various urban scenes, highlighting key locations and atmospheric details that immerse players in your game’s world.
- User Interface Elements: Design a set of cohesive UI components (such as icons, menus, buttons, and HUD elements) that reflect the overall visual style and support a smooth user experience.
- Supplementary Visuals: Optionally, produce additional assets like promotional banners, logos, or mascot illustrations that could enhance marketing materials and further unify the game’s aesthetic.
- Supporting Design Documentation:
- Style Guide: Compile a concise guide outlining the chosen color palette, typography, and visual motifs. This document will help ensure that all assets are consistent and can be easily integrated by the development team.
- Iterative Process Documentation: Provide brief annotations or a presentation of your design process, showing how initial concepts evolved into final production-ready assets.
- Final Production-Ready Assets:
- Deliver high-resolution digital files (e.g., layered PSDs, vector files, PNGs) for all graphics. These assets should be fully polished and ready to integrate into the game engine for a seamless player experience.
- Ensure that all assets are organized in a clear package (with naming conventions and folders) to facilitate an easy handover to the development team.
Scheduled check-ins to discuss progress, address challenges, and provide feedback.
