LoveCards

Description

Different than “get well soon” cards, LoveCards recognizes that sometimes we all need a little support for going through a mental health issue – that support is not just limited to physical illnesses. They’re intended as a gentle show of encouragement for anyone going through something – whether it’s a tough life event or ongoing mental health challenges – even when we don’t quite know what to say. These cards may brighten someone’s day, or it may save their life. The main premise of LoveCards is that sometimes you won’t get well “soon” – it may take a little longer, and that’s ok too.

When you’re not feeling great, people tend to divert to the classics sayings:
• “it’ll all be ok”
• “just be positive!”
• “think happy thoughts!”
• “get well soon”

These statements can make people feel like they’re not allowed to be sad, or that they’re a burden if they don’t heal “soon”. The reality of mental illness is that it takes people months, years, or even their entire lifetimes to handle, and sometimes they have periods where things get worse before they get better. Examples of more helpful statements include:
• This is hard, and you’ve done hard things before. I believe in you.
• It’s normal to have some negativity in this situation so I’m here for whatever you need – whether you want to cry, eat a full bag of Cheetos, or take long naps.
• I know that it feels like everything sucks right now. I’ll be out here putting good energy into the world for you.
• I hope things improve for you.

The idea is to get rid of the burden of being “ok”/”healed”/”fixed” so that the support you’re giving to that person makes them actually feel truly supported and that it is unconditional.
