Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

Indigenous Sport Council Alberta (ISCA) is now recruiting university student interns for the SHED Summer Camp Program. Join us in Sucker Creek & Kapawe’no First Nation for a transformative summer work experience!

Embark on a life-changing journey with our Youth Leadership Mentor & Cultural Immersion Summer Program! Immerse yourself in Indigenous culture, empower youth leaders, and develop invaluable skills.

SHED Summer Camp is a holistic initiative promoting sports and recreation directly in Indigenous communities by fostering leadership and role modeling by community youth. As a youth leadership mentor you will play a unique role in facilitating youth leader training, preparing youth to be camp leaders. Then you’ll continue to be a mentor while contributing to youth and education programming in the community. As part of this experience you will learn from knowledge keepers and participate in cultural activities.

Program details: All youth leadership mentors will receive training in June and will take part in the Youth Leader Training and Camp Prep (Training Week). The minimum commitment is 2 weeks (Training Week + Week 1 of Camp).

Youth Leadership Mentors may also choose to commit to mentoring for additional weeks beyond the 2 week commitment [ full summer camp (6 weeks)]

Dates:

Training - June 29

Training Week - July 2-5

Summer Camp - July 8 - August 2

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Facilitate a youth leadership training program with youth aged 15 - 18 in Kapawe'no and Sucker Creek First Nation

Encourage youth to develop skills in engaging children in activities, organizing program activities, and leading summer camp programming.

Provide mentorship to youth as they become summer camp leaders, assisting them with facilitating activities and providing feedback

Developing a "workshop" related to a topic of interest from your degree program to engage youth in exploring post-secondary learning

Supporting community youth program and education coordinator with community program plans and events

Take part in and encourage youth and children participation in cultural activity programming

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will receive ongoing and regular support from ISCA program coordinator and youth and education program coordinators in the 2 communities. Students will also receive the Aboriginal Coaching Module training as part of this experience, and will take part in cultural learning with knowledge keepers in the community.

ISCA has applied for grant funding, and if successful will be able to provide an honorarium to students taking part.
