What is the main goal for this project?

The project's main objective is to undertake a comprehensive review of the Yonge North York BIA Business Directory. The expected outcome is a valuable resource fostering community engagement, supporting local businesses, and providing students with practical experience.


Expected Outcome:

By the end of the project, the goal is to have a fully updated and aesthetically pleasing Business Directory that offers the following outcomes:

  1. Comprehensive Information: The directory will provide accurate and detailed information about local businesses, including their products, services, contact details, and operating hours.
  2. User-Friendly Interface: The directory will feature an intuitive and user-friendly interface, ensuring easy navigation and accessibility for residents and visitors.
  3. Enhanced Community Engagement: The project aims to strengthen the connection between the community and local businesses by providing a platform for interaction and exploration.
  4. Increased Visibility for Businesses: Local businesses will benefit from increased visibility, attracting a broader customer base and fostering a sense of community support.
  5. Valuable Learning Experience: Student interns involved in the project will gain practical experience in data collection, collaboration, problem-solving, and project management within a real-world context.
What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?
  • Research and gather information on local businesses
  • Undertake an update of the existing directory content including adding new businesses and removing old businesses.
  • Create custom business descriptions where they are missing or uninformative
  • Collaborate with stakeholders for accurate representation and to request updated lists from managers of larger properties.
  • Provide overall recommendations for enhanced design and functionality of the directory.
  • Utilize the finished to directory to create a summary chart or graph of an up-to-date breakdown of the BIA's sectors.
  • Conduct quality assurance testing


How will you support learners in completing the project?
  1. Staff Guidance: Experienced staff members will be available to guide and mentor students throughout the project, offering insights, answering questions, and providing constructive feedback.
  2. Access to Tools and Technology: Students will have access to the necessary tools and technologies required for web development, including platforms for data collection, web design, and project management.
  3. Data Accessibility: We will provide a map of our area, and provide contact information for property management of larger properties where available, ensuring students have the information needed to create a comprehensive Business Directory.
  4. Regular Check-ins: Regular check-in meetings will be scheduled to monitor progress, address challenges, and discuss any issues that may arise during the project.
  5. Feedback Loops: Students will receive ongoing feedback on their work, allowing them to incorporate suggestions and continuously improve the quality of the Business Directory.
  6. Collaborative Environment: Foster a collaborative environment where students can engage with each other, share ideas, and seek assistance when necessary.


About the company

The Yonge North York Business Improvement Area (BIA) was recently established and is one of over 80 BIAs in Toronto. Our organization is overseen by a voluntary Board of Directors from our business community. Representing over 1600 business and commercial property members, with over 30,000 employees and 51,000 residents within our district, we are one of the largest BIA’s in Toronto. Located along the Yonge corridor between Hwy 401 and just North of Finch Avenue, our urban district is experiencing significant development.
