Details

Red River College is a learner-centered institution that places an emphasis on real-world experience and opportunities for students to take part in Work Integrated Learning (WIL). As part of the Applied Computer Education (ACE) department the ACE Project Space has been giving WIL experiences to students for the past 9 years. The ACE Project Space works with real-world clients to solve problems that will enhance their business. In the past ACE Project Space has worked with Government, not-for-profit organizations, established businesses and start-up companies. Solutions have been created for almost 100 unique clients and well over 100 unique projects have been completed.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions all work for this practicum will be completed remotely, and will be led by two ACE Instructors, Raeanne Hebert (communications) and Reynard Dela Torre (development).

Problem or opportunity

There are two main objectives or problems as part of the problem a that need to be resolved. There is a desire to expand existing exchange programs with international institutions. As part of the experience, some means of experiencing the partner organization is needed before the student travels to the institution. Currently under restrictions related to the pandemic, travel is not possible, but in a post-covid world a means of experiencing a partner organization in an immersive fashion would be desirable.

The second objective is to allow students who are dealing with the restrictions related to covid have an enriched educational experience while maintaining their safety and the safety of others. Red River College students should be able to work with their classmates in an interactive fashion, and have an enhanced experience where the camaraderie and friendships that form as part of the College experience can still be experienced by students. Something as simple as whiteboarding to brainstorm a solution is easy when in person, but is a daunting challenge to replicate in remote.

This project and its phases will produce a solution that will be developed to allow students to interact with the Red River College campus in Virtual Reality (VR). The VR experience will also allow existing Red River students to interact with other students and enhance their College life experience and give them rich interactions with their peers.

**This project requires one team of Five students.**

Objective

The goal of this practicum is to produce a WebXR VR platform that will allow international exchange students to experience the Red River College campus before leaving their home country, and to provide enriched experiences for Red River students to interact with their peers in a fun environment.

For phase 8 of this project the expected deliverables are as follows:

To accomplish this, we expect the student(s) will:

  • Finalize Project Hand-Off Documentation from Phase 7.
  • Complete deploy of Application.
  • Present Application to Stakeholders.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will meet with their mentors several times a week. During daily stand-up meeting, sprint reviews and retrospectives the academic supervisors will have constant contact with the students.
