About us: Canadian Herstory is a multi-faceted empowerment platform that focuses on sharing the stories of women in Canadian history to spread awareness of gender inequality and inspire future generations. We received not-for-profit status in May 2021 and originally began by creating short educational videos about women in Canadian history as a method to inspire a younger age during a time of heightened social media use and reduced classroom time. Today, we are creating an online Canadian women's encyclopedia to offer a place for cohesive further education. While we continue to make short videos, we feel they limit our ability to educate and would prefer to keep them going as a tool to create interest in Canadian women's history while offering a starting place for further research. While Canadian encyclopedias exist, we feel many lack gender and racial inclusivity. Canadian Herstory is building a website with an online encyclopedia to fill that gap and offer further information easily understood by a younger generation.
Your Role: As we are creating the online encyclopedia, we seek a website developer to join our team of volunteers. Your primary role will be designing and building the Squarespace website. This role includes but is not limited to: a home page, an about us page, a recommendation submissions page, a guest lecture offer page, a power of gender-equal education page, and most importantly, the encyclopedia page that will have numerous sub-pages, each featuring a different woman in Canadian history. As we aim for a young prime audience for this website, we hope it would have a relatively in trend style that would fit well with the illustrations of Canadian women we already have for the encyclopedia entries.
Expectations: We are looking for someone familiar with Squarespace who can work alongside our director in creating the website to feature an online encyclopedia. This internship will be completely remote and requires biweekly scheduled zoom meetings with our director.
Tools Required: As this is an online position, you must have your own computer and sufficient internet access. If you do not have adobe creative cloud and would require it for creating graphic designs for the website, we can provide it for you.
Skills: Intermediate web development knowledge, intermediate graphic design skills and the ability to learn Squarespace if you are unfamiliar.
