This project involves the creation of a comprehensive, and inclusive Arts and Crafts Curriculum tailored to the needs of young adults with developmental disabilities. The curriculum will focus on promoting creativity, fine motor skills, self-expression, and social interaction through a range of accessible and adaptive art activities. It will incorporate various art forms, materials, and techniques, while being sensitive to the unique learning needs of the participants.

Objectives:

  1. Develop a Comprehensive Curriculum: Design a series of structured, yet flexible lessons that encourage creativity and engagement among young adults with developmental disabilities.
  2. Incorporate Adaptive Techniques: Ensure that the activities can be adapted for individuals with varying abilities and motor skills, promoting inclusivity.
  3. Foster Self-Expression and Communication: Include activities that encourage participants to express themselves and communicate through art.
  4. Promote Social Interaction: Design group activities that encourage teamwork, cooperation, and social engagement.
  5. Ensure Accessibility and Safety: Ensure that all materials, tools, and processes are safe, easy to use, and accessible to participants with physical or cognitive limitations.
Deliverables

Project Phases:

Research and Exploration (Weeks 1–3):

  • Research best practices in teaching arts and crafts to individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Interview professionals in special education and occupational therapy to understand adaptive techniques if possible
  • Review existing art programs for people with disabilities to gain insights.

Curriculum Design (Weeks 4–7):

  • Develop a draft of the Arts and Crafts Curriculum, including lesson plans, activity instructions, and materials lists.

Adaptations and Accessibility (Weeks 8–9):

  • Focus on ensuring accessibility in the curriculum by integrating adaptive tools, materials, and processes.
  • Consult with experts or individuals experienced in inclusive arts education to refine the curriculum for various needs if possible.

Finalization and Presentation (Weeks 10–12):

  • Finalize the curriculum and all accompanying materials, incorporating feedback
  • Present the curriculum to Resilient Hearts Inc. staff, including training resources for instructors.


Project Deliverables:

Arts and Crafts Curriculum:

  • Lesson Plans: A set of detailed lesson plans for 8–12 weeks, each focusing on a different type of art (e.g., painting, drawing, sculpting, collage).
  • Learning Objectives: Clear goals for each lesson, outlining expected outcomes in terms of skill-building, creativity, and engagement.
  • Materials and Tools List: A list of materials, including adaptive tools for individuals with different abilities.
  • Activity Instructions: Step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow and adaptable for different learning paces.
  • Activity Variations for Different Abilities:
  • Adjustments for individuals with fine motor challenges or cognitive delays.
  • Visual supports and simplified instructions where needed.

Training Guide for Instructors:

  • A guide for instructors on how to lead the classes, including tips for working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Strategies for managing classroom dynamics, supporting individual needs, and fostering an inclusive environment.


Learning Outcomes for Students:

  • Curriculum Design Skills: Gain hands-on experience in designing an educational program for individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Understanding of Accessibility: Learn how to create inclusive, accessible, and adaptive activities for diverse learners.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work as part of a multidisciplinary team and communicate effectively with community partners.

  • Comprehensiveness of the Curriculum: Does the curriculum provide a wide variety of arts and crafts activities that are adaptable to different abilities?

  • Creativity and Engagement: Do the activities foster creativity, self-expression, and enjoyment for participants?
  • Usability for Instructors: Is the curriculum easy for instructors to implement, and does it provide adequate guidance for working with individuals with developmental disabilities?

This project will not only allow students to contribute to a meaningful initiative but also provide Resilient Hearts. with a valuable resource that promotes creativity and inclusivity for young adults with developmental disabilities.
