Project Summary: Looking to elevate your organization, and bring it to the next level? Bring on learners from Cape Breton University to be your learner-consultants, in a project-based experience. Learners will work on one main project over the experience of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools. Learners in this program/experience are very motivated and have the qualities to conduct research activities which could advance the profession of healthcare management. The capstone course is a culmination of the healthcare management program that sets the ground work for this course. This course requires students to broaden their knowledge base to analyze specific healthcare case studies, situations, issues &/or research to demonstrate critical thinking for problem solving and decision making. What can our learners do for your company? Learners in groups of 4-5 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.There will be one project manager per team who will be the direct contact to you and your organization. Project activities that learners can complete may include, but are not limited to: Understanding basics about the importance and function of leadership through understanding leadership styles, proficiencies, and competency to achieve excellence in managing within a diverse healthcare system. Demonstrate collective leadership capabilities to discuss healthcare issues, collaborate an administrative solution, and to provide meaningful feedback to peers. Analyze specific healthcare case studies, situations, issues and /or research to demonstrate critical thinking for practical problem solving, analysis and decision making. Students will understand and self-reflect on their own leadership styles focused on personal leadership throughout the course. Students will prepare and deliver a presentation applying key leadership theories, conduct professional research and literature reviews on a specific healthcare issue, analyze the findings and providing recommendations of implementation strategies to address the issue within the organization. Students will demonstrate fundamental management concepts related to healthcare issues with a healthcare facility. Students will demonstrate high-quality academic written and oral communication skills, including professional healthcare terminology. Students will exhibit originality and academic integrity in all written work complying with CBU and course policies.

This Capstone Project provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate competency on the key concepts of business analytics. Students will integrate knowledge gained throughout the program - including leadership and management principals, analytical skills, data visualization, data mining, and statistics – to complete the capstone project. By taking this course, students will be guided through the process of developing their soft (communications) and hard (Technical) skills while delivering a business analytics project to support decision making in organizations. The emphasis will be on the application of methodologies and analytical tools to solve real-world problems in R&D, marketing, supply chain, healthcare, finance and/or other disciplines.

This semester a group of students will spend 100 hours per Project Team analyzing an organizational challenge of your choice and assist you by developing a strategy to help you address your challenge. Based on information you provide, each team will deliver an action plan that incorporates your unique circumstances and outlines a path to more efficient and effective operations. The majority of the students in the Post Baccalaureate Capstone Course are International Students with a variety of undergraduate degrees and employment experience.
Capstone Project for Business Analytics
The capstone project provides students with an opportunity to apply and integrate concepts learned in the Business Analytics program to solve a business problem using data analytics tools and solutions. The overall aim of the capstone project is to help students relate acquired business analytic knowledge to real business problems. This looks like an internship, a learning experience well-recognized for its impact on the student’s application of classroom knowledge to the world of work, and student’s knowledge of careers and critical career success factors. This course is an excellent opportunity for students to practice problem-solving skills. The course uses Python as the analytical tool to formulate and solve problems based on a variety of mathematical modelling techniques. Companies can define projects in data visualization, data analytics, database systems, data analysis, cloud-based services, software development, and general business analytics projects.

Learners in this program/experience will gain an understanding of accounting issues and practices relating to long-term intercorporate investments and financial statement consolidation. Emphasis will be placed on the direct approach of preparing consolidated financial statements. Students are focused on following International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), but have also reviewed and are comfortable with GAAP for private enterprises (ASPE). Students can assist with major topics such as investment in equity securities, business combinations, consolidated financial statements, intercompany profits & losses, ownership issues, and other consolidation reporting issues.

In this project, students will work in groups of four to six to learn about the working conditions of a participating long-term care facility in their community. Students will conduct research on the realities of working in this type of facility. They will collect quantitative and qualitative data in an effort to develop recommendations for improvement.

Business Competitive Strategies

The students will work on a strategic business unit and/or a new product idea in a company. They will use industry standard methods to conduct in-depth analysis of the business environment and develop strategies. The strategies can be related to the development of generic business strategies, strategies for international/domestic expansion, corporate level strategies, strategies about managing innovation, strategies about ethics and social responsibility, among others. The project is flexible and may include the needs of the company regarding strategy. Related business areas outside the area of this course/expertise of the supervisor may also be considered given the company has resources to guide such a project and the students have the interest in it.
