Project feedback
The concept for the project overall is really fun and working on this game allowed for a lot of unique opportunities. This project allowed me a lot of opportunities to refine my workflow even further, and was great to have worked on a game with an official commercial store page. The team has been very supportive of all of the contractors, looking for ways to get us all the experiences we need to build our portfolios, which is great to see. The biggest issues I took were the organization of the team, lack of clarity in terms of planned features, that being if they were planned ahead in the first place, and the inconsistency in terms of those features being changed. There were multiple occasions where I would be working on something, only to find out later that the design for it had changed completely, or times where there would be a new feature that was not discussed at all until I would find out from someone else on the team that it exists. A lot of this could be remedied by a lot of preproduction work before the work on the project picks up, or in this case where it's in the middle of production, clearly defining everything wanted for the game, its implementation, functionality, etc. all in an easy to access location, like in a game design document that we all have access to early on. Meetings often were extended longer than they should have due to discussions about features that a lot of the time could have been resolved beforehand in preproduction or with a thoroughly designed GDD. For my field in particular, it felt as though not much thought was put into it beforehand, resulting in myself needing to essentially start from scratch in that area, which especially for the first major milestone of the demo release on Steam, put significant stress and work on me to ensure it was up to the quality myself and the team were happy with in an extremely short time. Asking the contractors and each individual team what they needed to be successful would have been a great move that could have remedied these issues fairly early on. Overall, I do find that the organization and planning of the team have both improved since the start of this contract, although the wider issues are still present unfortunately. If the team continues to iterate and improve their workflows and planning of features, I can see a great level of success being achievable.
