Students from our MSc Data Science programme are looking for internship opportunities for up to six months to gain professional experience and to undertake an industry-based project (where possible). Your organisation can propose a topic/or area of work or one can be agreed with the student prior to their commencement of the internship.
Internships are undertaken in the July to December period, for between 3-6 months and the scheme enables our students to undertake work in industrial projects of direct value to organisations whilst simultaneously learning along professionals.
There are many advantages of recruiting a postgraduate student City:
- Postgraduate internships are fixed term and there is no requirement for you to offer work extending past this period. This means no long-term overheads or expensive recruitment fees.
- Our students can bring an established skill-set in key areas such as machine learning, data visualisation, Python and neural computing.
- Learner skills
- Python, Analytic problem solving, Modelling, Data analytics, Big data

The dissertation project provides the bedrock of the internship scheme and, ideally, the host company will have an industry-based project to offer the student which will then double-up as their dissertation. We just need to ensure that any proposed project meets the academic requirements laid out by the university and all students are assigned an academic supervisor who can advise and help to finalise this.
Project Examples
Students can complete a substantial project for your organization over the placement period. We suggest providing a starting project, but as the placement goes on there may be other duties or projects the student is asked to complete as well. Providing a central project creates structure for the internship, and gives the student (and company) a tangible goal.
Project activities that students can complete may include, but are not limited to:
“Identifying groups within a dataset of children at risk and children in care, determining how often and if there are patterns which result in a child moving from one group to (at risk) another (in care)”.
“Developing a Data-Centric Approach to Investigate the Relationship Between Corporate Bonds for a Liquidity-Based Score”.
Additional company criteria
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Can students start between early-mid July?
Can you guarantee the role will be for a minimum of 3 months full-time?
